SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A billing error has double charged approximately 411,000 Medicare beneficiaries, according to government officials.The error affected those who pay their premiums to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through Easy Pay (Automated Clearing House payments.) Officials say the premiums were deducted twice directly from beneficiary’s bank accounts.“They took out both my husband’s and my payment twice,” said Jacki Montierth.Montierth teaches tech seminars for seniors at Oasis Lifelong Learning Center in La Mesa, including about how to use their smartphones and computers to access financial and medical documents.She says, she closely monitors her account, but worries other people may not be as vigilant or even know how to check their statements.“I’m sure this will hurt many people on limited income and my bank says it may take a week to refund,” said Montierth.So far, officials say about 20% of the duplicated money has already been refunded. They said they are working to return the rest of the money by Wednesday, September 25.If the money has not been returned by then, Medicare officials claim the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Service will begin reversing the rest of transactions to complete the reimbursement.Those who worry they have been overcharged can call 1-800-MEDICARE to report an issue. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three Palomar College students will attend a national technology summit Wednesday to meet with students from around the country and share their work focusing on technological innovation.Quin Smith, a geologic information systems student, and drone technology students Isaac Hernandez and Diana Perez received scholarships from the National Science Foundation and the American Association of Community Colleges to attend the three-day Advanced Technology Education conference in Washington, D.C.Two students from Palomar College attended the conference last year as well as part of an NSF grant program, according to the college."It's really exciting to have our students share their work and their experience -- not only with other students from around the country, but also with the faculty and NSF program officers who will be at the conference," geography professor and drone technology program co-founder Wing Cheung said.The three students are expected to learn more about technology careers and development from industry professionals and some 850 student attendees.The ATE conference is in its 26th year, according to the AACC."This is going to help me learn how to break into the field and see what I want to do because we'll get to see all kinds of applications (for drone technology) we wouldn't have even thought about," Perez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A boy found wandering in the parking lot of a Rolando church Monday was reunited with his mother.The pastor of the Fellowship of Love Divine church found the boy around 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot on Aragon Dr., near the Kroc Center.San Diego Police got a call about 30 minutes later from a mother reporting her child missing from a home about a block away."He was clean. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and ABC) - Fishermen had a close encounter with killer whales off the San Diego coast that was caught on camera. The group was on a 21-foot boat looking for yellowtail when they came across the orcas. "Out of nowhere, one of them popped up right next to the boat 3 or 4 feet away from me…landed, splashed me, and splashed the whole side of the boat. I screamed,” witness Nathan Benge told Good Morning America. One of the killer whales had a playful interaction, performing a belly roll beneath the surface of the boat’s wake, GMA reported. After a week of deliberations, the Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges. Those charges included rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women.
