They say everything's bigger in Texas, and that apparently includes truck decals.A Texas sheriff on Wednesday suggested criminal charges are possible for the owner of a white truck that bears a profane message for President Donald Trump and his supporters, sparking a debate about the line between obscene words and freedom of speech."F*** TRUMP AND F*** YOU FOR VOTING FOR HIM" reads the decal in bold white letters. A hand with a middle finger extended sits in the middle of the decal.In a post on Facebook, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy E. Nehls said he had received numerous calls about the offending sticker. Those who have recovered from the coronavirus have been asked to donate convalescent plasma to help patients fight the virus.The American Red Cross says it has seen demand for convalescent plasma double as cases rise across the US. The Red Cross says that donations of convalescent plasma are unable to keep up with demand.The plasma is used for its antibiodies, and while not considered a cure for the virus, it could help patients fight off the disease. Franklin Miles, a recovered COVID-19 patient, said he learned about the need for convalescent plasma while in the hospital. He said he didn’t know if he would survive.“It is rewarding to be one of the catalysts to have it, recover from it and can help whether it’s one or 50 people or 100 people,” Miles said.Miles said he had to wait 28 days to donate, and the process is similar to giving blood. He has donated every 28 days since recovering.Doctors are still researching the effectiveness of convalescent plasma, but so far, it appears the earlier COVID-19 patients can receive plasma, the better. 1064

There are currently only a few treatments in helping to fight COVID-19, and one is antibodies from a Coronavirus survivor. But gay men wanting to donate are being faced with hurdles.A donation ban started with a 1980s restriction in the height of the AIDS and HIV crisis when the federal government created a lifetime ban on blood donations from gay men.The rule was replaced in 2015 with a regulation that requires a year of abstinence to donate blood.In April of this year, the FDA revised the abstinence period for gay men to donate blood or plasma from 12 months to three months in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.Chris Sanders with the Tennessee Equality Project says this is a start but these guidelines are not created equal."My call to action would be that the Congress of the United States will hold hearings on this rule and put pressure on the FDA to make this change," said Sanders.As the American Red Cross is pushing for more COVID-19 survivors to donate their antibodies to help sick patients, Sanders says some who are willing to help are being turned away."I talked to a gay man in East Nashville today who has survived COVID-19, and I asked him if the ban weren’t in place would you consider plasma donation and he said he would," said Sanders, "There are potential donors in Tennessee who would get turned away because of this unscientific, outdated FDA rule."Gay rights advocates say if this country wants to save more lives it will review what they call outdated policies.This story was originally reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF. 1565

The coronavirus is only the sixth time a global health emergency has been declared.Compared to the previous five emergencies, experts say the coronavirus pandemic is easily the most severe.Here in the United States, we’re still far behind when it comes to recovery. Health security experts at Johns Hopkins University say we have seen some success in treating the virus, but there hasn't been much success in responding to it, especially when it comes to testing.“Many states did not invest in testing and many states did not invest in contact tracers, so when you see cases spiral out of control in certain states, it's not surprising to me,” Dr. Amesh Adalja of Johns Hopkins University said. “That's exactly the recipe you would set up if you wanted cases to rise.”Dr. Adalja says in order to tackle the spread of the virus, the US needs to prioritize testing, tracing and isolating.Health experts across the country have also signed a letter calling on the US to shut down the country and start over. The letter includes a list of recommendations for what's needed before cities can reopen. It calls for enhanced testing capabilities, more contact tracers and more personal protective equipment.Dr. Bill Hanage at Harvard University was one of those who signed the letter, and says safely reopening can happen, “If we look at countries like New Zealand, South Korea, then you can actually see that it is possible with sustained action to shut down, strangle the virus, throw it back to the sea, and then you can open with substantial amounts of normal economy.”Hanage adds that while it can be done, it's yet to be seen if the US is capable of doing this.The Association of American Medical Colleges has also offered a road map that would change the country's approach to the pandemic. "Between remote learning, social distancing measures, cancelled vacations, and fewer extracurriculars, parents and children alike have faced a lot of disappointment and unexpected difficulties in 2020.
