SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The restrictions due to the pandemic are exposing us to another threat.Between restaurants and gyms being outside and SDG&E urging energy conservation during the heat wave with all of us at home, we're more exposed to the heat and the potential dangers that come with it.Nurse Practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr works in the ICU for UC San Diego Health and said she's seen a handful of cases in the last month, which is more than normal.Each year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention says an average of 658 people die from extreme heat in the U.S.Gambles Farr said it's important to know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, "when you have heat exhaustion, your skin will be cold, clammy and you'll be sweaty. When you bridge over to heat stroke you'll have no sweating, you'll be red, and your body temperature will be over 103 degrees."Other symptoms for heat exhaustion include:? Muscle cramping ? Fatigue ? Headache ? Nausea or vomiting ? Dizziness or faintingSymptoms for heat stroke:? A body temperature greater than 103°F (39.4°C) ? Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating) ? Rapid, strong pulse ? Throbbing headache ? Dizziness ? Nausea ? Confusion ? UnconsciousnessIf you're suffering heat stroke, Gambles Farr says your body is literally cooking, "you can start having what we call multi-system organ failure in which your kidneys can be affected, you're not getting rid of waste in that point in time and a lot of times these patients become unconscious."One of the dangers with drinking alcohol while in the heat, Gambles Farr explained, is that person isn't moving around as much and therefore unable to recognize the affect of the heat. She said the situation becomes most dangerous when someone who is intoxicated passes out in the heat.If you see someone suffering from heat stroke, call 911. While waiting for help, cool the person down with water, or put ice packs on their neck and armpits.To stay healthy, the CDC and Gambles Farr say stay hydrated, avoid alcoholic beverages, wear sunscreen and loose fitting clothing.Those most at risk, according to the CDC, are children, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions 2204

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department is investigating a stabbing in Encanto after a victim was found with stab wounds.Witnesses tell 10News a fight broke out between two males near the intersection of 65th Street and Wunderlin Avenue, across the street from Encanto Elementary School. Their ages are unknown. One male was stabbed at the scene, he was found near the park and recreation center where children were playing, according to witnesses. The second male fled before police arrived, police caught up to him and arrested him on Massachusetts Avenue.   615

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District says it has removed a letter from President Trump inserted into food baskets that, according to the district, downplays the importance of wearing a mask. The district says the letter “significantly diminishes the scientifically-backed importance of wearing a mask to protect against the transmission of COVID-19.”According to the district, the letter was placed into boxes of free groceries set to be distributed to 50 million families across the country.The district says President Trump’s letter recommends that Americans practice social distancing and “consider wearing a face covering in public.”“Science is clear: wearing a mask works to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” Superintendent Cindy Marten said. “Masks are required in California and on every San Diego Unified school campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District, one of the state's largest districts, begins the new school year online Monday.Even though California has given both private and public schools in San Diego County the green light to reopen schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, SD Unified officials say for now they will stick with distance learning.The district's online instruction plan includes:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progressSome children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments for in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district."The teacher will of course try various interventions teaching strategies online, but if the teacher comes to the conclusion that this student would benefit from in-person interventions, then the teacher will reach out to the family," said San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors: Students who had below standard marks on their spring 2020 report cards, special education students who did not meet IEP goals, and special education students with intense support needs.The district says this option will not be offered immediately and will take teachers a few weeks to make these assessments. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego students Friday are expected to take part in the county's largest ever high school walkout on climate change. "I think it's a pivotal moment for youth," said Katelynn Sutton, a senior at High Tech High in Point Loma and event organizer. Around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sutton will lead dozens of students plan on a walkout. The students will hop on a bus to San Diego's City Hall, where they will attend a public rally for climate action for the rest of the school day."It's going to show adults they need to take action now because we don't have any more time," said Sutton.Around the same time at University City High, senior Summer Camporesi will be leading hundreds of students on a walkout."We'll be meeting in the middle of school and then walking up Genesee [Avenue] to Standley Middle School," said Camporesi.At a park near the school, they will join several hundred middle school students for an hour-long rally, before heading back to class. In all, dozens of schools across San Diego County are expected to take part in the global climate strike, most of them high schools."We're showing it's super important. We're willing to take time out of our education," said Camporesi.Several area school districts, including San Diego Unified and Sweetwater Union High School District, have passed resolutions supporting the youth-led global campaign.
