HARBIN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed new year greetings to workers, farmers, local residents and officials during his visit to northeastern Heilongjiang Province on the first two days of the year.     Braving the freezing weather, Wen visited the cities of Daqing and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang. It was Wen's third visit to Daqing since 2003. At Daqing oilfield, he said Daqing people had not only produced two billion tonnes of oil for the country, but also the invincible Daqing spirit which was kept well over the past five decades. BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will continue encouraging outbound investment while attracting foreign investment in 2010 for "stable and relatively fast" growth of the country's economy, a government official has said.     Outbound investment, or "go-global" strategy, should aim at making use of overseas resources, market and advanced technologies, so as to help facilitate development of China's domestic economy, Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission, said in the speech posted on the commission's website Tuesday.     The remarks were made at a conference held in Beijing on foreign investment on Dec. 11, but was not released until Tuesday.     In the first three quarters of 2009, China saw its investment overseas at 32.87 billion U.S. dollars, up 0.5 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).     The country would also continue to attract foreign investment, he said. "Social stability, huge potential market and low cost of productive resources are still advantages for foreign investment," he said.     The country would see more advanced technologies and talents from foreign countries and foreign investment would better serve the structural reform of the country's economy.     Zhang said the government would stress national economic security while seeking to increase foreign investment. "We have to properly handle new challenges and situations when further opening sectors, including finance and telecommunications."     China's foreign direct investment shrank 14.26 percent from the same period last year to 63.77 billion U.S. dollars in the first nine months as foreign companies cut spending amid the global economic downturn, according to the MOC.     In the speech, Zhang also said China's currency was facing renewed pressure to appreciate because of the quantitative easing monetary policy in developed countries, a weakening dollar and recovery of China's economy.     The pressure would likely spur massive inflow of speculative money, making liquidity management more difficult.     Premier Wen Jiabao also said in December in an interview with Xinhua that the yuan faced appreciation pressure. "China will not yield to foreign pressure for the appreciation of its currency yuan in any form," Wen said.     "A stable Chinese currency is good for the international community," Wen said.

TOKYO, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with Japanese counterpart Katsuya Okada Thursday evening to discuss bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern.     Yang said after the new government was formed after the Aug. 30general election of Japan, leaders of the two countries have met under many circumstances to reach important consensus on strengthening strategic mutual beneficial relations. The bilateral ties are embracing fresh opportunities of development and a main purpose of his visit is to discuss with the Japanese side how to further improve the relations.     Yang said the two countries should maintain high-level mutual visits and economic dialogues to deepen cooperation. On issues where divergences still remain, the two countries should seek solutions on the basis of dialogue and consultation.     Yang also suggested Japan and China should work to ensure the peace and stability of East Asia, which includes measures to bring Democratic People's Republic of Korea back to six-party talks and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. They also discussed issues such as climate change.     Okada also believed Japan and China should increase communication in all areas to enhance the mutually beneficial bilateral ties.     Yang also met with Speaker of the House of Representatives Takahiro Yokomichi and President of the House of Councillors Satsuki Eda on Thursday.     Yang told the Speakers of Lower and Upper Houses that the Shanghai Expo, which is to open next May, is a good channel of friendly communication between China and the rest of the world. China appreciated the assistance provided by the Japanese Diet to the preparation of the Expo and will continue to work with Japan to enhance cultural and personnel communication between the two countries.     The Japanese Speakers of the Diet said China and Japan should not only closely cooperate on bilateral issues, but also work together to settle regional, international and global issues. They emphasized communication between the legislation bodies are important and the Japanese Diet will exert every effort to boost bilateral ties. They also said Japan is actively preparing for the participation of Shanghai Expo and believed the Expo will be a success.     Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cui Tiankai was present during the meetings.     Yang's four-day visit to Japan, which started here Thursday, is the first since the country saw a change of government in September.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- An Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) could make the Chinese mainland and Taiwan complement each other and achieve the best win-win results, Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), said here Monday.     "The ECFA could enhance the well-being of the people across the Taiwan Straits," Yao said in a statement on the ministry's website.     He added that with increasingly strengthened cross-Straits economic cooperation, the signing of the ECFA should be in line with the development of the cross-Straits relationship and the characteristics of the mainland-Taiwan economic and trade cooperation.     The ECFA would help reduce trade barriers gradually and bring positive effects to the economies, trade and most industries across the Straits, according to a latest research report completed by the academy of international trade and economic cooperation under the MOC.     Official figures revealed that the combined cross-Straits trade volume stood at 129.22 billion U.S. dollars in 2008.

BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Premium of China's insurance companies hit 1.02 trillion yuan (149.6 billion U.S. dollars) in the first 11 months of this year, up 11.65 percent from a year earlier, according to the China Insurance Regulatory Commission Thursday.     The year would be the first year that China's insurance premiums exceeded 1 trillion yuan, data from the commission showed.     From January to November, premium of property insurance rose 22.28 percent year on year to 264.02 billion yuan, and that of life insurance was 757.66 billion yuan, an annual increase of 8.37percent.     The commission said the country's insurance firms were expected to eye combined profits at 46.09 billion yuan in the first 11 months, an increase of 57.45 billion yuan over the same period of last year.     Profits of the country's insurers nationwide was about 26.1 billion yuan in the first half, up 98 percent, the commission said in July.
