(CNS) -- A brush fire that may have been sparked by illegal fireworks on Sunday afternoon has scorched about 1,200 acres near the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway in Santa Clarita and is about 30% contained Monday morning, authorities said.About 400 firefighters and three helicopters remained on duty overnight working to put out flames and clear lines of vegetation to contain them, Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Sky Cornell said.As of 9 a.m., the fire was listed at 1,300 acres and 30% containment. No injuries were reported and no homes were damaged, authorities said, but an assessment released after daybreak indicated that nearly 4,800 structures were threatened.At one point on Sunday, flames threatened nine homes in rural Agua Dulce Canyon which were ordered evacuated, and 200-250 people were advised to prepare to leave their homes if conditions worsened, according to county Fire Chief Deputy David Richardson.Evacuees were told to take small animals and report to the Victory Outreach parking lot at 37419 25th Street East in Palmdale but to stay in their cars due to COVID-19.The fast-moving Soledad Fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, pushed by winds of 20-30 mph, Richardson said.The flames skirted the 14 Freeway, burning near Soledad Canyon and Agua Dulce Canyon Roads and jumped over the freeway in a couple of places only to have those spots put out quickly by firefighters, he said.Initially, the northbound 14 was closed at Agua Dulce Canyon and southbound lanes were shut down at Soledad Canyon, the California Highway Patrol reported. The southbound lanes were reopened at 11:55 p.m. Sunday and northbound lanes 1 and 2 were reopened.The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Richardson noted that illegal fireworks could be seen in the area as firefighters worked Sunday evening. 1860

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Home to Pike Place Market, rainy days and views of the Puget Sound, Seattle is also one of the first places in the U.S. to initially face the coronavirus and the fallout that followed.“We were the first city that really had to grapple with this,” said Don Blakeney, vice president of advocacy and economic development with the Downtown Seattle Association, a nonprofit representing about 2,000 businesses and residences.When COVID-19 first appeared, they worried that years of investment in the downtown core could be in jeopardy.“You saw overnight downtown clear out of employees,” Blakeney said.That made for a tough spring there, but then summer got hot when protests sparked nationwide.While the vast majority of protests across the country this past summer were peaceful, when they got out of control, some businesses paid the price. Damages from civil unrest became yet another blow to their bottom line, on top of the pandemic.“Viruses don't cause that physical damage,” said Sean Kevelighan, CEO of the Insurance Information Institute.Recently, the institute compared financial losses from civil unrest this year to similar events in the past.The Institute found that, based on today’s dollars, the most expensive civil unrest event in the U.S. happened during the L.A. riots in 1992, costing .4 billion.The rest of the top five were:L.A. You know, bring your own blanket, maybe some coverings, but it's largely, we're kind of learning as we have these new things that we're responding to,” Blakeney said.They are lessons that may help in their resiliency and that of businesses in other cities on the road to recovery. 2733

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV)  -- A former navy corpsman who's saved hundreds of lives says she was only doing, "What any American would do". Gina Austin could not take seeing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. She packed up kayaks, jet skis and supplies and headed to Texas where she helped save people and pets. Austin makes it sound simple. But she was elbow deep in devastation for a week. Her first rescue was a tiny one."We found a little Chihuahua and we were calling her baby girl," she said, noting that she worked with a rescue group to help save thousands of animals. "People had chained their animals up so we actually had to go in with bolt cutters. There were dogs just clinging to cars..."At one point, Austin said she saw a family in a steel boat paddling toward her with shovels. "And they asked… did anybody see a little Chihuahua?" Austin said. The family was describing girl baby girl, her first rescue. That day, the family was reunited.  995

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California has accepted a record number of freshmen and transfer students that includes the most ever from California for the 2019-20 academic year.The university system said Monday its nine undergraduate campuses accepted 71,655 California freshmen and 26,700 students who will transfer from California community colleges. That's more than 3,200 California students than last year.UC schools have been under pressure to accept California residents so they can have a cheaper way to complete a four-year degree at the state's top public universities.Nearly 218,000 prospective undergraduates applied for at least one UC school for fall 2019 during the application period that ended Nov. 30, according to figures released by the university system.
