Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King is facing heat after someone managing his campaign's Facebook page posted a meme on Sunday criticizing a Parkland student for donning a patch of the Cuban flag."This is how you look when you claim Cuban heritage yet don't speak Spanish and ignore the fact that your ancestors fled the island when the dictatorship turned Cuba into a prison camp, after removing all weapons from its citizens; hence their right to self defense," the meme said alongside an image of Cuban-American Emma Gonazlez, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, speaking at the March for Our Lives rally in Washington on Saturday. In the comments section, someone managing King's Facebook page sparred with Brandon Wolf, one of the survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida."When it was my community, where were you?" Wolf asked. "When it was Sandy Hook? Columbine? Were you on the sideline mocking those communities too? Did you question someone identifying as a mother? Did you question whether people like me were crisis actors?"Wolf added: "Emma stood for 6 mins and 20 seconds to honor the lives of 17 gone too soon. The least you could do is shut your privileged, ineffective trap for 6 seconds to hear someone else's perspective."The person managing King's page responded: "Pointing out the irony of someone wearing the flag of a communist country while simultaneously calling for gun control isn't 'picking' on anyone. It's calling attention to the truth, but we understand that lefties find that offensive."As of Monday morning, the post is still up.King's congressional office has not responded to CNN's request for comment, but told The Washington Post that the campaign team was responsible for the meme. The campaign did not respond to CNN's request for comment.Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student and activist David Hogg asked Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio to respond to King's post."Hey @marcorubio @Emma4Change s family fled Cuba to escape totalitarianism and live in freedom just like your family could you please respond to @SteveKingIA," Hogg tweeted. It's one of several posts on King's page that have been critical of the activism displayed by the Parkland shooting survivors advocating for gun control.King?has a history of making statements critical of immigrants and minorities.Last year, he praised prominent Dutch nationalist politician Geert Wilders, tweeting that Wilders "understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies."In 2016, the Des Moines Register reported that a confederate flag was displayed on King's desk."I don't agree with that, and I guess that's his decision," then-Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, a Republican, told the Register. "People have a right to display whatever they want to. But I'm proud to say we're on the side of the Union. And we won the war."And in 2013, King explained his opposition to the DREAM Act, which would have granted legal status to young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children, by suggesting it would open the border to good students and drug mules in equal measure."For every one who's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that they weigh 130 pounds and they've got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert," he told Newsmax. 3497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homeowners with rooftop solar arrays and consumer advocates are pushing back against a proposal by San Diego Gas and Electric to nearly quadruple the bill on customers who use very little energy from the grid.SDG&E is asking the Public Utilities Commission to raise the bare minimum bill from to a month, saying the change is needed to accurately reflect the fixed costs of keeping low-usage customers connected to the grid. The move would affect any customer whose bill is below a month, regardless of whether the customer has solar panels. The move to change the minimum bill is part of a broader rate design proposal that would add a fixed charge to all residential customers whose bills exceed the minimum charge.SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones says by raising the minimum cost "floor" that customers pay, the utility can lower the "ceiling" on bills overall. He said the new structure is projected to lower energy rates in the long run, saving 64 percent of customers an average of a month. The other 36 percent of customers would see bills go up by an average of a month as a result of the change. But green energy advocates argue the change will punish solar customers and others who use the least electricity. About 18 percent of SDG&E customers would be affected by the higher minimum bill.Adam Rizzo of Palomar Solar said the prospect of higher costs for solar users might discourage some people from installing panels, even though the charges could still be reduced or denied by regulators."People hear snippets. They don't hear the facts, and unfortunately it might slow down the industry a little bit," he said. The proposal is before the California Public Utilities Commission. If approved, it would take effect in July 2021. 1794

(CNN) -- Boxer Patrick Day died Wednesday, four days after he was knocked out during his bout with Charles Conwell on Saturday night in Chicago.Day, 27, succumbed to a traumatic brain injury he suffered that night, according to a statement from his promoter, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment."He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer Joe Higgins," DiBella said in a statement. "On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury."In a Twitter post addressed to Day on Tuesday, Conwell wrote he "never meant this to happen to you.""All I wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back, I would," Conwell wrote. "No one deserves this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you."After Conwell, a 2016 Olympic boxer, knocked Day out in the 10th round, Day appeared to be down for several minutes as a medical team rushed in to assess his injuries. Eventually he was taken out of the ring on a stretcher, and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.DiBella said that Day didn't need to box as he came from a good family, was educated and could have made a living in some other way."He chose to box, knowing the inherent risks that every fighter faces when he or she walks into a boxing ring," DiBella said. "Boxing is what Pat loved to do. It's how he inspired people and it was something that made him feel alive."Conwell was in control of the fight in Wintrust Arena from the beginning, according to ESPN.Before he became a professional fighter, Day was a highly decorated amateur. He won two Nationals titles, the New York Golden Gloves tournament and was an Olympic Team alternate, all in 2012.He turned pro in 2013 and captured the WBC Continental Americas championship in 2017 and the IBF Intercontinental championship in 2019. In June 2019, he was rated in the top 10 by both the WBC and IBF. As of Saturday, Day's record stood at 17-4-1, with six knockouts.Dibella said it is "very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this.""While we don't have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate," DiBella Entertainment said."This is a way we can honor the legacy of Pat Day."CORRECTION: A previous version of this story misidentified Patrick Day's promoter. His name is Lou DiBella. 2696

YUMA, Ariz. — Mayor Douglas Nicholls announced a state of emergency Tuesday in Yuma, Arizona, due to the large amount of asylum-seeking migrants being released into the city.Yuma is the first border city to declare a state of emergency in response to the influx of migrant families coming to the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum. The U.S. Border Patrol has been releasing migrants to Yuma's shelter system over the last few weeks."There's an imminent threat of having too many migrant releases into our community, and it's above our capacity as a community to sustain," Nicholls 591
