COPENHAGEN, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Denmark implemented a tax on foods high in saturated fat from Saturday, the first of its kind in the world, which will affect products containing more than 2.3 percent saturated fat.Butter, cream, cheese, meat, cooking oil and processed foods like pizza and dark chocolate are among thousands of products affected. The so-called fat tax is pegged at 16 Danish kroner (2.87 U.S. dollars) per kilo of saturated fat.Thus, a 250-gram packet of butter, which previously cost 15.5 Danish kroner (2.78 dollars), will now cost 18.10 Danish kroner (3.25 dollars). SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Facebook is close to a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the charges that the world's largest social network misled users about its use of their personal information, the U.S. media reported Friday.The proposed settlement would require Facebook to get users' consent before making "material retroactive changes" to its privacy policies, said a report from The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the talks.The agreement with the FTC is also expected to ripple much farther in the tech industry as more companies are developing programs to observe people's online behavior and profiting from the personal information, such as the target advertisements.With a current 800-million-user base worldwide, Facebook changed its user policy in late 2009 to disclose more of users' personal information without adequate notice, leading to a federal investigation along with mounting complaints online.On Thursday, two U.S. representatives asked the Palo Alto, California-based company to explain a February patent application, saying that it raises alarm bells about how the company tracks users on other websites.Outside the U.S., Facebook is also drawing criticism on its privacy policies in countries with strict privacy laws, such as Germany. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- For women, chocolate consumption needs to be high, which can lower stroke risk, researchers from the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The consumption of chocolate has been demonstrated to reduce diastolic and systolic blood pressure in randomized, short-term trials. Chocolate has also been shown to improve endothelial and platelet function, and to improve insulin resistance.Susanna Larsson Ph.D. and the team conducted the research on the Swedish Mammography Cohort's 33,372 adult females aged from 49 to 83 years without history of stroke, coronary heart disease, stroke, or diabetes.They found those who ate at least two chocolate bars each week appeared to have a 20 percent lower risk of stroke, compared to those of the same age and weight who rarely or never ate chocolate. But, they found, it was only those in the highest quartile of chocolate consumption who had a significant drop in stroke risk.The researchers explained that cocoa has flavonoids - powerful antioxidants that can suppress LDL, low-density lipoprotein, that can cause stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
