OLYMPIA, Wash. — When Dana English went home during her lunch break on August 22 she didn't expect to see her 6-year-old son, Carter, covered in blood. The mother was aghast to see her son sitting on the front steps of their home in Olympia, Washington, bleeding and injured."I just instantly flipped out," English said in an interview with KOMO. Carter saw a child being bullied outside the family's home and told the group of kids to stop, English said. The group of about six or seven kids started attacking him with rocks, sticks and rubbed sawdust in his eyes.English took her son to the emergency room immediately. 648
On the night before emergency workers had to evacuate people from a Florida nursing home where eight died, residents suffered in the sweltering heat as staff used fans to cool them, and one woman sat naked in a bed in a hallway, a video obtained by CNN shows. The 34-second recording shows a couple in a room at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Hollywood, with a fan sitting on a nightstand, blowing air across the room and a window cracked open slightly.According to the family member who shot the video, those two nursing home residents received medical treatment and are recovering. 607

One U.S. president spoke with Sen. Susan Collins several times ahead of her announcement Friday that she would support Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court -- and he's been out of office for nearly a decade.Former President George W. Bush called a number of senators in recent weeks, and had several conversations with Collins to reassure the key Republican vote about Kavanaugh's character and temperament, a person familiar with the matter tells CNN.Kavanaugh's confirmation was thrown into doubt after a tense Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in which Christine Blasey Ford alleged the Supreme Court nominee had sexually assaulted her when they were in high school in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations against him.Collins supported an additional FBI background check into the accusations, which stoked speculation that she might then break with Republicans and vote against Kavanaugh's nomination, but the results of that investigation -- along with Bush's calls -- paved the way for her support Friday. 1047
On Tuesday, Casey Louviere was mowing her yard in Louisiana when she suddenly passed out from heat exhaustion."I started seeing stars, and suddenly everything was black," Louviere said. She says she thought she was fine, as she had been drinking water at the time."Just simply went outside to cut grass, it was so hot. You know, I was fine, then everything just turned black. The heat is not something to play with," Louviere explained.Officials with the Scott Fire Department say they responded to the call on Rue Bon Secours of a person unconscious in their front yard."SFD began assessing the patient and administering basic life support interventions. Acadian Ambulance medics arrived, and the patient was transported to a local hospital," a release states. But the firefighters didn't just help Louviere medically. The firefighters stayed with her children until a friend was able to come over. They also came back to finish mowing her lawn."Something like that brings tears to your eyes, knowing that there are still good people out there like that," she said. "They took time out of their day to cut my grass and they didn't have to do that.""We didn't have to do it. We didn't do it to get recognition by any means, but we wanted to bless her and bless her family. Her grass was high and we wanted to help her," Fire Captain Kris Gumpert said. However, Louviere says she did not know the job was finished until she saw it on Facebook."I'm working from home currently, so I didn't walk outside this morning. When I got back last night, it was too late for me to see into the yard."Louviere says she is thankful for the firefighters' surprise and is doing a lot better."I feel great now, I think it was 4 saline bags later, but I feel great now," Louviere said. This story was first reported by Katie Easter at KATC in Lafayette, Louisiana. 1850
