A report released from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says a patient died after a nurse at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville selected the wrong medication to give them, putting at risk the hospital's ability to receive Medicare payments. In fact, the paralyzing anesthetic that was given to the patient by mistake is one of the drugs Tennessee uses to execute death row inmates during lethal injections. The incident happened in December of 2017. According to a report conducted by CMS, the patient checked into the hospital with a subdural hematoma and vision loss. The patient was sent to the hospital’s radiology department for a full body scan. When the patient told caregivers they were claustrophobic, doctors prescribed Versed, a standard anti-anxiety sedative. The report from CMS said a nurse told the patient they were going to give them "something to help him/her relax."The patient instead received a dose of vecuronium from that unnamed nurse. Vecuronium is a neuromuscular blocking drug that causes paralysis. As such, the CMS report says it can also stop the body from being able to breathe, in a painful experience for patients, who remain conscious and aware."Patients can experience intense fear when they can no longer breathe. They can also sense pain," 1418
A new forecast from NOAA now says there is a likelihood of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season, citing a developing El Nino, lower-than-normal sea surface temperatures, stronger wind shear and drier air.The update is a change from the forecast in late May that called for a normal to slightly above normal season. An average season in the Atlantic sees 12 named storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. 425

A study conducted by Stanford researchers found nearly 10% of those tested exhibited coronavirus antibodies. The study was published in the Lancet earlier this week. The study involved dialysis patients and randomly tested over 28,000 samples. The samples were taken in July as part of the patients’ treatment. The data found stark differences based on region. The northeast around 27% of patients with coronavirus antibodies, compared to 3.5% in the west. The study’s authors stressed that the study oversampled minorities. Minorities, the study found, were considerably more likely to have coronavirus antibodies than the rest of the population.“Uncertainty exists as to whether seroprevalence estimates in the dialysis population can be extrapolated to the US population more broadly,” the study reads. The study indicated that herd immunity is still far off, as estimates say at a minimum, 50% of the US population would need to be infected to reach that level. 969
A pilot and his assistant have been arrested in Northern California and are accused of kidnapping and attempting to deport a 21-year-old Chinese flight student.Jonathan McConkey, reportedly the general manager of the IASCO flight school, and his assistant, Kelsi Hoser, are accused of planning and carrying out the kidnapping.Incidentally, the flight school posted a video on Facebook last year talking about how much it enjoyed training Chinese flight students. 475
A month ago, a former student roamed the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, opening fire on terrified students and teachers at the Florida school. The massacre of 17 students and faculty members added to a grim statistic: three of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history happened within five months of one another. In the four weeks since the Valentine's Day shooting, the survivors have turned into activists on the national stage. Even as they grieve, they've demanded action on gun reform. In between congressional meetings and protests, they've attended memorials and funerals. 606
