Ohio State's board of trustees is debating the fate of football coach Urban Meyer, who could face disciplinary action over his handling of domestic violence allegations against one of his former assistants.The board of trustees held a meeting private Wednesday to discuss a possible punishment against Meyer.Meyer has been accused of turning a blind eye to alleged domestic violence committed by Zach Smith, his wide receivers coach at both Ohio State and Florida. Smith was fired by Ohio State in late July when his ex-wife filed a domestic violence civil protection order.A day after Smith's firing, Meyer told reporters at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago that he was not aware of any allegations against Smith. Reports later indicate that Meyer's wife and wives of other coaches were aware of the allegations against Smith.Meyer then acknowledged in a statement that he misled reporters about his knowledge of Smith's allegations.  950

On Thursday, Facebook said it would not accept new political ads in the week leading up to the 2020 election in an effort to protect the integrity of U.S. elections.Facebook also announced Thursday that the platform would remove any posts that "claim people will get COVID-19 if they take part in voting," and will add more information to any posts that attempt to suppress the vote with the threat of the virus.In addition, the company will add more information to posts that attempt to "delegitimize" the outcome of the election or "discuss" the legitimacy of voting methods.Finally, Facebook said it would add more information to posts from political candidates that attempt to claim victory before final results are tallied. The company says it will rely on "official results from Reuters and the National Election Pool."Facebook faced criticism for neglecting to combat the spread of disinformation prior to the 2016 election. U.S. officials say Russians used the platform to boost divisive and misleading information during that election, and reports indicate that several other countries are attempting to influence the 2020 election. 1149

One of the largest anti-smoking groups is now going after cigarette makers for their trash.The Truth Initiative released a new video in an effort to combat the littering of cigarette butts. It debuted nationally last week during the MTV Video Music Award.The organization is tying this latest campaign into their public petition to get more businesses and public places to go smoke-free.Cigarette butts are the most littered item on the planet, and it’s the most picked up item from beaches all over the world.They contain hundreds of chemicals that show up in wildlife and waterways. The butts are made with a type of plastic that can take a decade or more to decompose.Cigarette makers have tried cleaning up their act over the years, but so far, nothing has really made a dent.There is a startup company that claims to have a biodegradable cigarette filter, which breaks down in a matter of days. The company says they are in talks with cigarette makers and are currently looking for a partner to start manufacturing the green filters. 1046

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.5 has struck just outside of Oakland. The earthquake struck at 7:18 p.m. just two miles outside of Oakland Monday. No damage or injuries are being reported. The USGS originally reported that the earthquake was a 3.8 magnitude, then a 3.6. The quake was eventually downgraded to a 3.5.  439

One of the former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd is requesting charges against him to be dismissed.The lawyers for Derek Chauvin reportedly filed a motion to dismiss the second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter charges against their client.Meanwhile, prosecutors are seeking stiffer sentences for all four men charged in Floyd’s murder.In documents filed Friday, prosecutors noted that Floyd was vulnerable and treated with particular cruelty.Two of the officers--J. Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao-- are charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter.A judge has the discretion to order up to 15 years on the murder counts under the state’s sentencing guidelines. The maximum sentence for second-degree murder is 40 years.The death of George Floyd sparked protests across the nation and around the world against police brutality and systemic racism. 954
