CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) It is no secret that restaurants throughout San Diego County have been struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic, but one restaurant in Otay Ranch was forced to close before it ever had its grand opening, just as the pandemic was starting. Hurricane Grill and Wings was supposed to open sometime between late January and early February, but when the pandemic started, it delayed everything. The owner Abu Syed is now getting ready to open the restaurant on Monday, September 28th.The restaurant will open at just 25% capacity indoors and patio seating outdoors. Like so many other restaurant owners, Syed says the landlord did give them a break on rent, but will owe it at the end of their lease. The restaurant is staffed with 32 employees, 16 of them are full-time.In August, the California Restaurant Association projected that close to 30% of restaurants in the state could close for good because of the pandemic. Syed is hopeful that he doesn't become a part of that statistic. Hurricane Grill in Wings is located at 2040 Birch Road, Suit M101 in Chula Vista. 1098

Chipotle introduced its queso cheese sauce to the nation on Tuesday after years of customers asking Chipotle to have the product. Although there was a lot of pomp and circumstance among Chipotle fans about adding queso, it appears Chipotle's queso was not a hit. Chipotle had said for years that it could not offer queso while meeting its food standards. But last week, after testing queso at a local level, Chipotle said that Tuesday would be the first day queso would be available nationwide. It appears based on social media comments that Chipotle's queso was a disappointment.   650

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - An Eastlake pizza restaurant shut down Wednesday after an inspection turned up signs of rodent nests, droppings and urine.Filippi’s Pizza Grotto at 871 Showroom Place, near Otay Lakes Road and Hunte Parkway, received a primary inspection report April 18 from the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health. The inspector found 20 dried rodent droppings in a back oven and rodent nests in the panels of two ovens, County documents showed. CINCINNATI -- In a “bold move,” Kroger will phase out plastic bags and transition to reusable bags by 2025, according to CEO Rodney McMullen. The Cincinnati-based grocery chain announced the switch Thursday, saying the move “will better protect our planet for future generations."Kroger-owned QFC in Seattle will be the first to make the transition; plastic bags are expected to be eliminated there by 2019.Kroger Executive Vice President Mike Donnelly said the decision aligns with the company’s commitment to making a positive social impact.  "We listen very closely to our customers and our communities, and we agree with their growing concerns," Donnelly said in a news release. McMullen said the move to nix plastic correlates with the company’s “Zero Hunger | Zero Waste commitment” -- a goal to divert waste from landfills and donate food to hungry families. The grocery chain has also been redesigned milk jugs in an effort to use less plastic, CNN reported. It started using the new container in about half of its dairy products last year. 1064
