Hurricane Maria made landfall Wednesday in southeast Puerto Rico, ripping trees out of the ground and entangling two-thirds of the island in hurricane-force winds.Maria made landfall near the city of Yabucoa with winds of 155 mph -- just 2 mph short of Category 5 status, the National Hurricane Center said.By 9 a.m., those winds had weakened to 145 mph. In a bizarre twist following the Parkland, Florida school shooting that killed 17 people, the confessed shooter Nikolas Cruz has been receiving "fan letters" from across the nation. The Sun Sentinel reported that Cruz not only has been receiving letters from admirers, he has also received money for his commissary account, which allows inmates to purchase snacks and accessories. So far, Cruz has been given 0. The letters, many of which are coming from teenage girls, are not being shown to Cruz as he is on suicide watch at the jail.Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein told the Sun Sentinel the craze is "perverted." Some of the letters have included suggestive photos of young women. According to the Sun Sentinel, one woman from Chicago sent nine photos of herself that were sexually suggestive. "In my 40 years as public defender, I've never seen this many letters to a defendant," he said. “We read a few religious ones to him that extended wishes for his soul and to come to God,” Finkelstein added, “but we have not and will not read him the fan letters or share the photos of scantily-clad teenage girls.”The Sun Sentinel reported that one person from Texas sent a letter that included hand-drawn hearts and happy faces. "Your eyes are beautiful and the freckles on your face make you so handsome," the woman said in a letter to Cruz. “I’m really skinny and have 34C sized breasts.”A teenager wrote, “I’m 18-years-old. I’m a senior in high school. When I saw your picture on the television, something attracted me to you," the Sun Sentinel reported.Cruz, who admitted to killing 17 people last month at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, awaits trial. IMPERIAL BEACH (KGTV) -- Just in time for spring break, county health officials announced Saturday that it's safe to go back into the waters of Imperial Beach. The re-opened beach-line includes the south end of Seacoast Drive to Carnation Avenue (including Camp Surf) in Imperial Beach.The ocean shoreline from the International Border to the south end of Seacoast Drive will remain closed until sampling confirms these areas are safe for water contact, officials said."Testing confirms water quality along the Imperial Beach shoreline meets State health standards following recent Tijuana River sewage impacts," said the Department of Environmental Health and Hazardous Materials Division."Recent water quality testing conducted by DEH confirms that Tijuana River flows are no longer impacting these beaches," the DEH said.The announcement comes after weeks of beach closures due to a sewage-contaminated runoff into the Tijuana River valley which flowed into south county beaches. The beaches have been closed over a dozen times as a result of the heavy rainfall this season."Tijuana River flows enter the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and associated estuary before being discharged to the Pacific Ocean, just over a mile north of the International Border," according to the DEH.Anyone who needs more information is asked to call the U.S. International Boundary & Water Commission at 619-662-7600.
