The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, a rare and deadly disease, on Tuesday, the World Health Organization reported. The declaration came after laboratory results confirmed two cases of the disease in the province of Bikoro."Our top priority is to get to Bikoro to work alongside the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and partners to reduce the loss of life and suffering related to this new Ebola virus disease outbreak," said Dr Peter Salama, WHO Deputy Director-General, Emergency Preparedness and Response. "Working with partners and responding early and in a coordinated way will be vital to containing this deadly disease."This is Congo's ninth outbreak of Ebola virus disease since the discovery of the virus in the country in 1976. The judge presiding over the trial of four former Minneapolis police officers involved in the arrest that led to the death of George Floyd dropped a lower-level murder charge against the man who knelt on Floyd's neck, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune and KMSP-TV in Minneapolis.Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill dismissed a third-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin on Thursday. Chauvin still faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The state has five days to appeal the ruling.Cahill also ruled that three other former police officers, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, will remain charged with aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter. Chauvin, Kueng, Lane and Thao were arrested in June, days after video of their arrest of Floyd was shared widely on social media. Video of the arrest showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's death for nearly nine minutes. Floyd was pronounced dead hours later.Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder, but Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison later added a charge of second-degree murder. But on Wednesday, the journal entered the world of politics.In an unusual and highly unprecedented fashion, the New England Journal of Medicine wrote a scathing rebuke of US leaders’ response to the coronavirus pandemic. While not formally offering any sort of endorsement, the journal referenced the upcoming election in its editorial. The piece did not name President Donald Trump or opponent Joe Biden by name.“Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences,” the journal wrote. “Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent."The editorial, titled “Dying in a Leadership Vacuum,” comes just 27 days before the US election. While much of the world has been able to keep coronavirus deaths to a minimum in recent months, the US still has one of the highest death rates in the world from the virus related to the coronavirus.The United States continues to average 800 deaths per day from the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The New York Times reported late Saturday night that Senator John McCain will lie in state at the Arizona Capitol building and then the U.S. Capitol before being buried at Annapolis, Md.McCain died on Saturday in Arizona after a 13-month battle with brain cancer.The Times cited Republican sources as McCain's family finalizes plans to honor the senator from Arizona. McCain will also reportedly have a full dress funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.Two of McCain's former political rivals, Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, will deliver eulogies, the Times reported, citing Republican sources. President Donald Trump is reportedly not invited to McCain's funeral, but Vice President Mike Pence will receive an invitation. McCain will be the 30th dignitary to have lain in state in the U.S. Capitol since 1852, and the first since Senator Daniel Inouye lain in state in 2012. And so, we come into 2020 and it's a completely different landscape right now, and honestly, we don't know what to expect yet," says Dr. Craig Sawchuck, a clinical psychologist with the Mayo Clinic.Dr. Sawchuck says there is some speculation that seasonal depression rates could increase this year."Kind of think about it like people are operating at a deficit right now. With the number of stressors that have been going on in 2020, just the erosion effect has been wearing folks down, so maybe folks that have struggled with winter blues in the past, so maybe not full-blown seasonal depression but winter blues, you layer in the erosion effect with the stress and maybe that's going to put them more in the range of depression," says Dr. Sawchuck.Social isolation from the pandemic and any unhealthy habits that might normally form in the winter months could exacerbate seasonal depression."Energy goes down, we want to sleep more, there's that urge for carbohydrate cravings, increased weight gain and socially pulling back or withdrawing," says Dr. Sawchuck.Experts say if you suffer from winter blues or seasonal depression, there are things you can do to try and boost your mood."Seasonal depression and treatment during this time is a little tricky. Some of the things we would recommend are hindered by COVID-19, especially with the escalating rates. So, things like getting outside might be risky for some people with the transmission of COVID -19, so we’re thinking about some of the basic things to just take care of yourself. What are your coping skills? What are things that do get you involved and happy and excited?" says Dr. Apryl Alexander, a psychologist and professor at the University of Denver.Dr. Alexander says a recent study from the American Psychological Association reports that eight in 10 Americans are feeling stressed because of COVID-19. Even though we're in a pandemic, Dr. Alexander says it's still important to socialize, especially if you are prone to seasonal depression."So, how can you maintain those social connections during this time, whether its dance parties we’ve had in our department during COVID-19 to engaging with your family members on Zoom or other forms of social media," says Dr. Alexander.Dr. Alexander also says many psychologists and therapists are offering virtual sessions, so it's important to take advantage of tele-mental health visits.
