LAS VEGAS — For the first time in 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for the treatment of the flu.  The antiviral drug, called Xofluza, is a single dose treatment.  It is for patients who are 12 or older.  The drug must be taken within 48 hours of symptoms, according to the F.D.A. "Very exciting that we have another drug on the market," said Dr. Daliah Wachs.Xofluza is said to be as effective as Tamiflu in alleviating symptoms.  "Do I think it's a lifesaver? Potentially yes," said Dr. Wachs.Unlike earlier drugs, Xofluza is expected to work against drug-resistant strains. It will also shorten the length of the flu."The longer you have the flu, the more you are at risk for complications," said Dr. Wachs.Doctors say it is still critically important for everyone to get vaccinated, especially children and the elderly.  900

Leaders of the world’s most powerful nations wrapped up the Group of 20 summit on Sunday, vowing to spare no effort to protect lives and ensure affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all people.The two-day summit of heads of state was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed at least 1.38 million people globally, with the world’s highest death tolls recorded in seven of the G-20 countries. The virus has wiped out hundreds of millions of jobs globally and plunged millions into extreme poverty.The virus “revealed vulnerabilities in our preparedness and response and underscored our common challenges,” the G-20 said in a final statement that focused heavily on battling the coronavirus, enhancing environmental protections and supporting the global economy.The group vowed “to spare no effort to protect lives.”The G-20, which includes the U.S., India, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and others, also stressed the importance of global access to COVID-19 vaccines, drugs and tests.“We will spare no effort to ensure their affordable and equitable access for all people, consistent with members’ commitments to incentivize innovation,” the statement said.The G-20 expressed support for efforts like COVAX, an international initiative to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to countries worldwide. LA MESA (KGTV) -- It was a frustrating flight for one mother in La Mesa, who said an airline would not allow her to sit next to her toddler without forking over extra cash.Aliss, who declined to use her last name, said she chose seats together when she booked her ticket through a third-party website. Aliss and her son, Kai, were travelling from Providence, Rhode Island back to San Diego with a layover in Minneapolis. When she got to the airport in Providence, her seat on her Sun Country Airlines flight was not next to her child.“I would have never booked a flight where we couldn’t sit together,” Aliss said. She said her options were limited and that the representative with the airline said she could charge her a fee.“I can’t pay that. What else can we do? And she said, well for I can move you guys in a row front and back of each other. I said that doesn’t help my problem. He’s still not sitting next to me,” Aliss said. She said she told the airline representative not to charge her the money, but she was charged anyway. She said she did not get help from anyone with the airline, including the flight attendant. “She said no, you’re on your own. You’ll just have to argue with people,” Aliss said. Fortunately, a grandmother ended up giving up her seat so Aliss could sit with Kai. That was only the beginning of her problems. From Minneapolis to San Diego, Aliss’ flight was delayed. At first, it was only three hours.“No big deal,” she said. She tried keeping Kai entertained and saw many other parents in a similar situation. The three hour delay became much longer with passengers unclear on when they were going to leave. “It was confusing, frustrating,” Aliss said. She said they were promised 0 vouchers for the long delay. Aliss said their 3:10 p.m. flight finally left around 12:30 a.m. Team 10 contacted Sun Country Airlines, who apologized for what happened. We were also able to ensure two seats were assigned next to one another on her return flight. (KGTV) - On Wednesday, a team of researchers from the UC San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography will begin a 9-day exploration of the deepest parts of Southern California's coast.Sailing on the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, they'll use a Remote Operated Vehicle called "Hercules" to dive to the bottom of the ocean."Part of our mission is purely exploration," says Professor Lisa Levin, one of the researchers on the trip. "We're visiting places nobody's been to."The team will search 9 spots off the coast of Los Angeles and San Diego, located on an area of the Continental Slope called the "Borderlands." With various canyons, ridges, and seamounts, the depths range from 1,300 to 6,500 feet."We've selected sites that were dredged sometimes in the 1930s and 40s," says Levin. "Nobody's actually been down and looked with their own eyes, or with the aid of a camera to see what actually lives down there so that that's the exploration mode we're in."The researchers hope to collect samples of marine life and also minerals like phosphorus and manganese. They'll also look for bacteria in the sediment.Once collected, the team will study if any of it has potential for use by humans, either as medicine or other mineral-based purposes.The exploration will also help establish a baseline of what the ecosystem looks like now, so it can be protected in the future."We'll be looking at the microbes that live in sediments," says Levin. "To look at the potential of these microbes to produce chemicals that can cure cancer or provide aid in industrial processes. There's a variety of ways we humans might be able to use this."Part of the mission will also allow other people to take part in the exploration. The entire voyage will be live-streamed at www.nautiluslive.org and on YouTube and social media. LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A one-two punch of red tide and algae-filled lake water releases have had a devastating effect on sea life in Southwest Florida.The latest numbers from Lee County officials on Thursday reveal that well over 3 million pounds of fish have been removed from local coastlines.The county reports that contractors removing fish from Lee County beaches have amassed more than 1,400 tons of fish, and that crews in Sanibel have collected an additional 309 tons.Among the dead fish found include one dead Whale Shark on Sanibel, and numerous large goliath grouper and tarpon.Lee County has just received two new Sand Rake machines, purchased for ,000 each,  that are being immediately placed into service.Areas cleaned so far by Lee County and its contractor include 798
