PRETORIA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China has pledged to import more value-added products from South Africa to optimize bilateral trade.Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin made this pledge on Wednesday when he delivered a key-note speech at the China-South Africa Economic and Trade Forum in Pretoria.South Africa was the last leg of Jia's 10-day African tour which has already taken him to Cameroon and Namibia. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's disaster relief authorities Wednesday launched an emergency response plan to help victims of the rainstorms and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has left at least 30 dead.The China National Committee for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs initiated a level IV emergency response plan and dispatched a working team to help guide relief work in the flood-hit zone.Heavy rains began pounding many places in Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday. The level depends on damages and losses as well as the number of affected people.

GUANGZHOU, April 18 (Xinhua) -- China's trade volume will reach 5.3 trillion U.S. dollars by the year 2020, Li Gang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce, said Sunday.Li made the remakes at the ongoing 107th China Import and Export Fair, the country's largest trade fair, held in the southern city of Guangzhou.According to Li, China's merchandise imports and exports will hit 4.3 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020.Merchandise exports will top other countries and be 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020, 10.1 percent of the world total.Imports will reach 1.9 trillion U.S. dollars and rank second largest, accounting for 8.2 percent of the world total.Weighed down by the global financial crisis, the nation's foreign trade recorded a 13.9 percent year-on-year decline to 2.2 trillion U.S. dollars in 2009, with merchandise exports of 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars and imports of 1 trillion U.S. dollars.In the first quarter, foreign trade began to grow again, jumping 44.1 percent to 617.85 billion U.S. dollars, according to customs data.

PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday.The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- In a bid to further regulate the selection and promotion of government and Party cadres, the Communist Party of China (CPC) turned to the public for help in its four newly released documents."One breakthrough of these rules is we shift the focus from simply supervising the procedures of cadre selection and promotion to also weighing in what the colleagues and the locals think about," said a statement released Monday by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.The four documents, promulgated on March 31 by the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, cover the selection and auditing of officials and set out penalties for those found guilty of misconduct in the selection and promotion of government and Party cadres.According to the new rules, personnel departments should consult staff within the organization on every newly appointed officials. The results, paired with local Party committees' official report on personnel changes, will be submitted annually to superior Party committees' for review.These opinions will also be incorporated into the work evaluation of officials in charge of local cadre selection and promotion.In serious cases, leading officials in the Party committees who misuse their power and violate CPC regulations on the selection and appointment of Party and government cadres could be dismissed from their posts, demoted, transferred to other posts, or asked to resign.To better solicit public opinions, Party committees at provincial levels across the country are moving to open online service and telephone hotline for whistleblowers to report such violations.According to the rules, personnel departments must carry out investigation based on detailed reports from the public and the media.
