BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- China always opposes trade protectionism and will not take protectionist actions against overseas companies or foreign goods, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said here Friday. He made the remarks when he met the Minister of Knowledge Economy of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Lee Youn Ho. Chen said that media reports were incorrect when they equated China's latest circular to boost domestic demand and step up supervision on construction projects with protectionism. Chen said in China's government procurement, the term "domestic products" also include products produced by legally established foreign-funded companies in China. "China applied to join the World Trade Organization's agreement on government procurement a couple of years ago, which allowed member countries to bid on each other's government tenders." Chen said. "We hope China might join the agreement soon so as to further open up the government procurement market," he said. "China would like to maintain stable development in economic and trade cooperation with the ROK," Chen said. Lee said that China's trade policies were fair and transparent, and his country would like to work with China to oppose trade protectionism.
BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), had a meeting here with heads of the delegations of Taichung City and Taichung, Changhua and Nantou counties of Taiwan Saturday. On the same day, the CPPCC leader also paid a visit to an exhibition of farm produce and tourist attractions from these four areas of central Taiwan, at its opening day. Jia Qinglin (1st R), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), meets with heads of the delegations of Taichung City and Taichung, Changhua and Nantou counties of southeast China's Taiwan Province, in Beijing, capital of China, on June 27, 2009In his talks with the Taiwan visitors, Jia welcomed the four Taiwan areas to jointly hold the exhibition in Beijing. Since May last year, when the situation in Taiwan experienced a major positive change, the two sides have taken the rare opportunities and adopted a series of positive measures to promote cross-strait relations and made breakthroughs. Cross-Straits relations now exhibit a bright future of peaceful development, said Jia. In May last year, the Chinese Kuomintang Party (KMT) won in the island's elections. Jia Qinglin (2nd L, front), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visits an exhibition of farm produce and tourist attractions from Taichung City and Taichung, Changhua and Nantou counties of southeast China's Taiwan Province, in Beijing, capital of China, on June 27, 2009.More than ever, the Chinese compatriots living on both sides of the Taiwan Straits need to join hands to get over difficulties at a time when the impact of the global financial crisis still persists and the economic growth of the world is noticeably slowing down, said Jia, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Political Bureau. The mainland side is willing to do its best to strengthen cross-straits cooperation, in an attempt to assist Taiwan in getting over the difficulties brought about the global financial crisis, Jia said. The mainland has issued over 70 policies and measures, including those on farm produce and tourism, in favor of Taiwan compatriots and to deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, according to the top political advisor. He hoped that the compatriots of the two sides could jointly explore the road towards peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, share the achievements, jointly carry forward the common culture and heritage that are of the same root, and make joint efforts for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Also Present at the meeting were Beijing Mayor Guo Jinlong, President of the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) Chen Yunlin, Executive Deputy Director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office Zheng Lizhong, and Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Wan Jifei. The exhibition was jointly sponsored by the four central Taiwan areas and Beijing.

"I believe there is great opportunity for greater cooperation between United States and China," said Locke, a Chinese American, in his speech at a welcome ceremony jointly hosted by American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the US-China Business Council. His audience included dozens of Chinese businessmen from across the country and representatives of international corporations with branches in Shanghai. "I want China and the United States to lead the world and save the planet from irreversible climate change. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke delivers a speech at a welcome reception hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the United States-China Business Council, in east China's Shanghai, July 17, 2009. "We all share the same atmosphere, and if we do not act, we will all suffer from the coastal flooding, unpredictable weather and agricultural damage," he added. Locke spoke highly of China's efforts in eliminating carbon emissions. He said that developing new clean energy could create jobs in America, help promote renewable energy and curb pollution in China. "So much of U.S. direct investment in China created win-win opportunities for both workers in America and workers in China and benefit the climate in the world and planet as well," Locke said. He later attended the cornerstone laying ceremony of the United States Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo site.
BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The 11th China-European Union (EU) summit, after being postponed from December in France due to well-known reasons, will be held on Wednesday in the Czech capital of Prague. The resumption within half a year shows that China and the EU can endure all kinds of difficulties and tests, and shows the common desire of both sides to consolidate and develop the bilateral relationship, and indicates that the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership is at a new historical threshold. At the beginning of China's Lunar New Year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made a "journey of confidence" to the EU headquarters and four European countries, which hugely promoted the two sides' confidence of cooperation. During his visit, Wen agreed with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso that enhanced China-EU cooperation bears significance for the world and the China-EU summit would be held as soon as possible in 2009. Besides, as the relationship between China and France gradually improved, conditions for the summit were ripe. The upcoming summit will take place when the international situation is much different from earlier in the year. The global financial crisis has caused damage to the real economy, and A/H1N1influenza is posing a challenge to both China and Europe. In this scenario, Premier Wen's attendance at the summit not only demonstrates China attaching great importance to the China-Incomprehensive strategic partnership, but also China's determination and sincerity to join hands with the EU to deal with global issues such as the financial crisis. The summit will also help stabilize the China-EU relationship and strengthen its favorable trend of development. The twists and turns in China-EU relations last year provided an opportunity for reflection. As a high-level EU official said at a recent seminar, China and the EU should seek common ground while reserving differences under the comprehensive strategic partnership, which does not demand identical ideas from both sides. It will be a wise choice for both sides to respect the core interests of each other and deal properly with differences, compared with which, the China-EU cooperation is definitely the mainstream. China and the EU attach great importance to each other in their strategic considerations. Both sides have common economic interests and have a broad range of global issues to cooperate on. Therefore, a healthy and stable relationship serves the core interests of both sides. Leaders from both sides need to strengthen dialogue and exchange of contacts from a global strategic perspective on the basis of equality and mutual respect. In the face of the ongoing global financial crisis, the Prague China-EU summit is expected to push forward bilateral trade and economic cooperation which remains a key element of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership. Last year, the bilateral trade volume exceeded 400 billion U.S. dollars for the first time. The EU remains China's biggest trade partner and largest export market. Recently, the EU became China's largest source of imports while China remains the EU's second largest trade partner. China's steadily growing market presents great opportunities for European enterprises. However, since the beginning of this year, China-EU trade has been increasingly affected by the financial meltdown. Both sides are facing a key task to strengthen trade and economic cooperation and join hands to tide over the crisis. Sound cooperation between China and Europe, including participation in each other's stimulus plans, will help both sides fight trade and investment protectionism, boost confidence, and promote early recovery of the global economy. In December, the UN Climate Chance Conference will be held in the Danish capital of Copenhagen and various parties are still negotiating on a final deal. The Prague summit will help China and Europe to better understand each other's position on the issue and carry out practical cooperation. In fact, China and the EU have huge potential in cooperating in the fight against climate change. Both sides may expand cooperation in developing new energy and energy saving technologies, promoting a low-carbon economy, and making environment-friendly industries new economic growth sectors. There is a famous Chinese saying: people should see and tackle their issues from a long-term perspective with an open eye. Since 1975, China-EU ties have been upgraded from the constructive partnership to the comprehensive partnership to the current comprehensive strategic partnership which was established in 2003.This triple-jump process indicates that China-Europe relations are deepening with increasing global strategic significance. It is believed that the 11th China-EU summit, which has not come easily, will push forward China-EU ties to a new phase of development.
BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China has called for the EU to recognize its market economy status soon, said Yao Jian, spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) here Friday. China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming will attend the 11th China-EU Summit in Prague in the Czech Republic next week, Yao said. The summit will address China's desire to be recognized as full market economy by the EU soon, the limitation on high-tech exports to China from the EU and bilateral economic cooperation, Yao said. China need not be recognized by any country in terms of market economy as a concept, but market economy status is a technicality that will help China receive fair treatment in anti-dumping investigations, Yao said.
