Animal rescue workers say nearly 600 dogs were rescued from deplorable conditions in Tennessee. Now, dog rescue groups in the midwest are stepping in to help the animals get back to health. Battling multiple infections and numerous medical needs, the recently rescued Dachshunds and Shar Peis were taken from an alleged puppy mill in Madison County, Tennessee. A rescue group, Guardians of Rescue, posted on Facebook they were part of the 11-month-long investigation into the location. In Detroit, animal rights advocates, including Emily Seward from Dachshund Haus Rescue, have already stepped up to care for the animals."They were, and continue to be, in pretty rough shape," Seward said. For her, it's simply unimaginable how someone could neglect dogs so badly, and police say behind a 10-foot-tall privacy fence, the dogs had to face extreme abuse for a decade.Police say the dog owners who were selling them as part of a business had already been accused of abuse and neglect years ago.As investigators crack down on those behind the illegal operation, the dogs are now finally being given the attention they deserve after being rescued over the weekend.The rescued dogs are not available for adoption now, and are considered evidence in a criminal case. 1268

As a variant strain of the coronavirus spreads through the United Kingdom, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said in an interview on ABC News on Tuesday that it’s possible the variant is in the US."That's certainly possible I mean, when you have this amount of spread within a place like the UK, that you really need to assume that it's here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here," said Fauci on ABC News.The variant strain has fueled lockdowns and fears in the UK. It also has prompted much of the world to cut off travel to the UK. Health officials fear that the variant strain spreads more easily.The United States has not cut travel between the two countries. Fauci does not expect that to be necessary.“That's not that's not really in the cards right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the requirement of testing is something that is being actively considered right now," Fauci said.The CDC reminded the public that viruses often mutate. The CDC added that it’s investigating why this version differs from the disease caused by other versions that are currently circulating.As travel remains permitted between the two nations, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized officials for not cutting off travel. Cuomo did note that several airlines began testing passengers arriving in New York from the UK for the virus."Right now, this variant in the U.K. is getting on a plane and flying to JFK. Right now today,” Cuomo said. “One-hundred twenty countries require a test. We don't. Other European countries have done a ban. We haven't. And today that variant is getting on a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake before you learn. Be one of the 120 countries that requires a test before you get on a plane to come to the U.S. This is the mistake we made."The United Kingdom has implemented some of its strongest lockdowns since the onset of the pandemic in recent days. ANDERSON, Ind. -- A mother and stepfather in Indiana are accused of locking their children in a basement without food, water or a place to go to the bathroom.Connie and her husband Javier Campos were arrested over the weekend and charged with four counts of neglect of a dependent. The investigation began back in November 2017 when a 13-year-old boy ran away from home and was found at a local hotel. At the time, the investigator contacted the Department of Child Services because he believed the children may be in need of services. According to court documents, the couple had four children living in their home ages 13, 11, 10 and 8.The children told investigators that their mother and step-father would lock three of them in the basement of their home any time the adults would leave the house or go to bed.The children described using a bucket and bottle if they needed to go to the bathroom or holding it until morning.  “You go before, hold it or it sucks to be you,” the 13-year-old child told investigators.Each of the children had a bed in their upstairs bedrooms, according to court documents, but they were only there “in case CPS came then they would think we sleep there.” 1217

An online service that allows people to track criminal activity in their neighborhoods is now available throughout the San Diego area, officials announced Thursday.VIEW CRIME TRACKER MAPThe CrimeMapping.com website initially only covered communities under the jurisdiction of the sheriff's department, but it has been expanded to serve the entire county, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Aquino."CrimeMapping.com analyzes and maps crime data from arson to assault, burglary, drugs (and) alcohol violations, DUI, fraud, homicide, car theft, robbery, sex crimes, vandalism, car break-ins, weapons violations and even multiple crimes at a single location," Aquino said.Data resource users can view maps in either a satellite-photo view or on a road map, find crime listings compiled in a report format or shown as a graph to identify patterns or trends and get crime prevention tips."There is also an option to sign up for email alerts and to email a link to others, which would be useful for neighborhood-watch groups," Aquino said.The service is a joint program of the sheriff's department, the Automated Regional Justice Information System, the San Diego Association of Governments and law enforcement agencies across the county.The sheriff's department provides law enforcement for unincorporated communities and several area cities that contract with it in lieu of forming their own police departments. 1422
