(KGTV) -- The suspect deputies say broke into a Vista bike shop and stole more than ,400 worth of merchandise has been arrested.Ronald Gardner of Escondido was arrested on March 28 after deputies served a search warrant at his home.Gardner was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility for burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.Deputies also say three bicycles and some of the stolen sunglasses and bicycle parts were recovered and given back to the owner of the bike shop.RELATED: Vista bike shop targeted by thieves for the third time in six months?The owner of the “211 Bikes,” Jesse McCormack, found out that his shop had been burglarized after receiving a call from his security company.McCormack said this was the third time in six months the bike shop had been broken into. 874

(KGTV) - The man who tried to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in front of her Encinitas home was sentenced Monday to seven years in jail.Jeremiah Owens, 28, grabbed the girl and pinned her to the ground as she waxed her surfboard in front of her home on Neptune Ave in July 2017.Owens tried to drag the girl to a nearby pickup truck occupied by Christopher White, but the girl was able to break free and run home.White was arrested two days after the assault when a witness matched his pickup truck to the description of one which deputies wanted to find. Cynthia Santiago and the first Latina filling the role.“I'm excited and nervous, and excited-and-nervous is like a constant continuation,” Santiago said.She has been on the force for 10 years and said she joined the police department because she wanted to give back and help her community. She said she also feels some weight on her shoulders."I'm the first one stepping into this role, but I think that as a sergeant,” Santiago explained, “I think my career as a police officer and as a detective shows the type of person I am."She has experience in the patrol unit, domestic violence unit and as a detective."You know, just a regular person - I'm a mom, I'm a daughter and a police officer,” she said. “I don't want to just be considered just the 'Latina police officer.' I have plenty of extracurricular activities that I do outside of work with my family."Santiago took on special projects and efforts such as building a relationship between the department and the growing local Latino community. One way was by helping to start the Hispanic Citizen’s Police Academy last autumn.She will work out of the fourth precinct and said she hopes to continue working on these initiatives as a sergeant."It was so successful, that Hispanic Citizen's Police Academy, and hopefully we have another one because we had a lot of interest of people who still wanted to join,” Santiago said. “Once this pandemic leaves, maybe have some type of community event and invite the community leaders of the Hispanic population here in Virginia Beach."She officially starts her role on Thursday. WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is dismissing the latest White House offer in COVID-19 aid talks as “one step forward, two steps back.” However, the California Democrat said in a letter that she's still hopeful that progress can be made toward a deal.The White House had boosted its offer before Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Pelosi spoke on Friday afternoon, but the speaker says she wants to agree on specific language about what the money will go towards.“When the President talks about wanting a bigger relief package, his proposal appears to mean that he wants more money at his discretion to grant or withhold, rather than agreeing on language prescribing how we honor our workers, crush the virus and put money in the pockets of workers,” said Pelosi.President Donald Trump is eager for an agreement before Election Day, even as his most powerful GOP ally in the Senate says Congress is unlikely to deliver relief by then.Pelosi tells colleagues in the letter that while the administration tried to address some Democratic concerns, disagreement remained on many priorities.“A key concern is the absence of any response on a strategic plan to crush the virus,” said Pelosi. “We cannot safely reopen schools, the economy and our communities until we crush the virus with the science-based, national plan for testing, tracing, treatment and isolation, and for the equitable and ethical distribution of a safe and effective vaccine once developed.
