SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego student Emily Benkes says her mother has lived in their Carmel Mountain home for 32 years, never once feeling unsafe in the neighborhood.Tuesday, Benkes came home to a ransacked house. “We had our laptops out, I had some money on my desk, Xbox was gone, my Apple TV,” said Benkes. Benkes believes the person hopped their backyard fence, coming in from a nearby trail. Food was missing from the fridge, including a package of salami which they later found on the trail. The suspect entered the home by throwing a rock through the back window and climbing in. “I felt really violated, I couldn’t even go in my room just because I kept thinking that there was somebody in here going through my stuff,” Benkes.She posted what happened on Nextdoor, and now neighbors are trying to help; one neighbor believes their surveillance video captured someone hopping the fence. “I hope we catch this person and nobody else has this happen to them,” said Benkes. The family estimates several thousand dollars worth of goods were stolen; they have filed a report with the San Diego Police Department. 1122

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Serious crashes and traffic-related deaths have increased in San Diego, a trend the police department is hoping to reverse.One strategy to tackle the problem is education through enforcement operations.On Saturday officers focused on the Hillcrest and Linda Vista neighborhoods, citing drivers for speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs/signals and failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. They also cited pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right of way. "For me personally I really want to see the number of our serious collisions reduced because when I am on my normal shift I do go to the serious injury collisions since I work traffic division, and it's just really disheartening and sad to see people involved in preventable collisions getting seriously injured," said traffic Sgt. Robert McDonald. McDonald says the city saw 56 fatalities in 2018, a roughly 51% increase in deaths from 2017. He says 34 of the fatalities were pedestrians. Officers were also targeting people on scooters breaking the rules. "I have seen more and more people riding the scooters on the street, like they're supposed to, instead of the sidewalk, but we still have a continuing problem with people riding on the sidewalk, going too fast, drinking, colliding, injuring themselves," said Sgt. McDonald.Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 1541

Now some companies are helping their workers tackle the mounting debt, offering student loan assistance as a benefit.Fidelity Investments is one company leading the way with its Step Ahead Student Loan Assistance program. “We look at our jobs day-to-day and we try and figure out how we can help people make the right financial decisions in their lives and it was something holding back some of our folks here at Fidelity," said Jared Roethlisberger, a Fidelity Branch Manager in Mission Valley. "They couldn’t save for retirement or they were working on saving for that home, and this allows us, Fidelity, to help those associates be able to take a little bit more home in their pocket."Employees who’ve been with the company for at least six months are eligible for ,000 a year toward their student loans up to ,000.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Bill would help employers aid employees in paying off student loansFidelity started offering the benefit in 2016 and more than 9,300 employees have saved over million in principal and interest. Some companies are also getting creative, like providing an option to transfer carry-over paid time off (PTO) into a payment against student debt.Despite Fidelity's success, few businesses overall are offering this benefit. A 2018 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found only 4 percent of organizations offered financial aid to help employees repay student loans, the same as in 2017. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students can earn extra credit in a sociology class if they take a quiz calculating their "white privilege."Professor Dae Elliott is the purveyor of the 20-question quiz that urges students to evaluate situations and determine if their skin color has benefitted them in some way.Featuring scenarios like: “I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race,” and, “I can choose blemish or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin,” the quiz ranks a person’s privilege by tallying up the points they get for each question.In short, the higher one’s score, the higher their privilege.“I basically made it clear there’s a variety of privileges,” said Elliott, “we all have certain privileges.”Students of all ethnicities can take the quiz and can earn the same extra credit regardless of their white privilege score, according to Elliott.SDSU College Republicans president Brandon Jones says the quiz is racially divisive and his friends in Elliott’s class feel like they are being singled out.“I think what she was trying to do is racially bring people together,” said Jones, “but instead she’s excluding a whole group of people on campus.”Elliott says the evaluation is not about color, but a way in which everyone can understand each other better.“We need to listen to each other,” said Elliott, “give each other the same respect we give our own subjectivity.”Click here to see the quiz 10News obtained from a student in the class. 1557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say a Chula Vista woman killed her mother in a Mission Valley office building, then shot herself days later with the same gun.Homicide detectives investigated the 911 call from an office building on Camino Del Rio South in Mission Valley on July 22.Officers found Maria Kelly, 66, dead inside her office.RELATED: SDPD: Mother murdered, daughter deadKelly's 34-year-old daughter, Crystal Vasquez, drove to the location hours later.Vasquez went into the restroom of a nearby business and was discovered dead of a gunshot wound.San Diego Police said Vasquez shot and killed her mother the afternoon of July 20. The next day, Vasquez cashed a ,000 check written from her mother's bank account.Police told 10News the Vasquez likely shot her mother after being confronted about stealing money from the family business. Vasquez embezzled money from her mother's Mission Valley accounting business for about a year, according to police. Police believe Vasquez shot herself after learning about the possibility of cameras at the building's entry and exit.A forensic examination confirmed the handgun Vasquez used to commit suicide was the same gun used to kill Kelly.  Video surveillance also showed Vasquez was in the office with Kelly at the time of the murder. 1330
