SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county Medical Examiner has identified the second teenager killed after a car lost control on a Mission Valley freeway and crashed before bursting into flames last weekend.David Chavez, 15, was killed by blunt force trauma, thermal cause, and smoke inhalation according to the ME in the tragic crash on Jan. 18.Police say a car was speeding at about 3 a.m. on the westbound Interstate 8 ramp to southbound State Route 163 when the driver lost control and hit a guardrail, sending the car down an embankment where it a tree and caught fire.RELATED:Community helping family of teen killed in Mission Valley crashAt least 2 dead in fiery freeway crash in Mission ValleyAnother 15-year-old, identified as Gustavo Beltran, was also killed in the crash.The driver, a 17-year-old, was arrested by CHP on suspicion of DUI. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the heads of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling for the reinstatement of the “Safe Release” program and reimbursement for the cost of treating a recent influx of asylum seekers. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost are named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims the county has been harmed as a result of what it describes as a “sudden and unlawful change” in policy, releasing asylum-seeking migrants from federal detention into the county while “denying them previously-provided assistance in reaching their final destination(s) outside the County.” RELATED: Reaction: County of San Diego sues federal agency chiefs over asylum seeker careFrom 2009 to October 2018, ICE implemented a policy described in the lawsuit as “Safe Release”, which provided asylum seekers assistance in reaching final destinations outside San Diego, attorneys say. The aid came in the form of phone calls and transportation to other areas of the U.S. ICE officials said the policy ended last fall due to limited resources to support the program, according to the suit. The lawsuit claims some 40 asylum seekers and family members were dropped off at a San Diego bus station within 24 hours after the end of Safe Release. County attorneys say since then, as many as 80 parents and young children have been released into San Diego County each day. County attorneys wrote the vast majority of asylum seekers and family members must remain in the area without sufficient means to support themselves. The County of San Diego also wants a preliminary and permanent injunction requiring the defendants to resume providing asylum seekers and their family members assistance in reaching destinations outside the County. Amon Browning and his wife Christina were recently featured on ABC News. The San Francisco couple just retired, and they’re only 40 years old. “I was making ,000 a year, and Christina was making about ,000 a year,” says Amon Browning. In just eight years, they managed to save million by investing 70 percent of their income through a method called FIRE, which is short for Financial Independence, Retire Early. They gathered to learn what it takes, mostly significant financial sacrifices, to retire early. “The American Dream is getting a college degree, and this job, and this white picket fence. But all of that has this huge debt behind it,” claims a woman interviewed for the documentary.The goal of the film is to get people thinking about where they spend their money. “The consumerism culture is harmful. It really hurts people,” says another man as video of a massive Black Friday rush appears on the big screen.Ultimately, the documentary portrays how consumerism and marketing place so many Americans on the edge of bankruptcy. “We are spending money we don’t have to buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t know,” says another man in the documentary in an ominous tone. Nearly half, 44 percent, have credit card debt, and only 38 percent have an emergency fund. Those in the Choose FI community are the opposite. “People in the FI Community have a savings rates upwards of 40 percent,” says Mah. Meaning nearly half of their income is going into savings. Everyone in the movement is different in their quest to save and retire early; there’s no one specific way to do it. “Some things that most people cut: really expensive cable, really expensive phone bills, streaming services,” adds Mah. For others, it’s more drastic, like downsizing a house or giving up an expensive car for a used one. Everything is always going to be out of your control.”“Even if I don’t reach financial independence, retire early, I think I will be better for trying than not to try at all,” says Mah. The FIRE movement takes a great deal of sacrifice. To be successful like the Brownings, you must reduce spending, pay off your debts, and maximize your savings by setting aside 40 to 60 percent of your income. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The names Linda and Charles Van Kessler might have sounded new, but their efforts were anything but."I started the charity in 1978 and I had to work very hard through jobs when I came here to California," Charles Van Kessler said.Charles was an orphan at a young age in Europe when he arrived to the states and met his wife, Linda."I just felt I needed to do something and it's been phenomenal since," Charles described. "We want to help children that don't have it as easy and are bearing burdens that are too much for their age."That's when the couple created Passion4Kids, a non-profit that helped handicapped, abused and neglected children."We bring toys we bring games we pray with them, we play with them. We do just a lot of stuff to make these kids happier."They felt the effects of COVID-19 like many other organizations.
