(WXYZ) — A 15-year-old who was sent to a detention center for not completing schoolwork will be released from custody to her mother.The Michigan Court of Appeals made the ruling Friday.Grace had gotten into legal trouble last year, and as one of the conditions of her probation, she had to attend school and complete classwork, which her mother tells ProPublica her daughter was doing until the pandemic hit. She was ordered to a juvenile detention center for violating probation after not completing online coursework.Oakland County Judge Mary Ellen Brennan ruled on July 20 to keep Grace in detention after violating probation by failing to complete online school work.Brennan said she had to consider the actions that placed Grace on probation to begin with. Last fall, arguments between the teen and her mother turned violent. The judge says the mother was the victim and the daughter the aggressor.ProPublica, a nonprofit publication, brought attention to Grace's story."This is a student with disabilities who was struggling with remote learning situation and ended up in detention because of that," said Jodi Cohen, a reporter with ProPublica Chicago."In school the student gets one-on-one support from teachers and is allowed extra time to complete assignments because of (ADHD) and other disabilities," Cohen said.Without that support and the daily structure she was used to, Grace struggled. So she reached out to her special education teacher, "to say she needed help and that one-on-one tutoring began the day after the violation against probation was filed against her," Cohen said.ProPublica's investigation also found the situation may have been influenced by race in addition to Grace's learning disabilities. Grace is Black. "The case may also reflect, some experts and Grace’s mother believe, systemic racial bias. (AP) — Avalanche debris was spotted during a search for a missing Marine who failed to return from a backcountry skiing trip through the Sierra Nevada, California authorities said Sunday.First Lt. Matthew Kraft began trekking the rugged Sierra High Route on Feb. 23 and was scheduled to complete it Monday or Tuesday near Bridgeport, northeast of Yosemite National Park.The search on Sunday will primarily be air-based because "ground searching has proven to be too dangerous due to snow instability and avalanche concerns," the Inyo County Sheriff's office said in a statement. BALTIMORE — The University of Maryland, Baltimore has suspended an experiment they were conducting after reports indicate they were denying pain relief to animals they were operating on.  The university confessed they were forced to stop their experiment because they failed to comply with multiple federal regulations, according to the national watchdog group SAEN, or Stop Animal Exploitation NOW!, which monitors U.S. research facilities for illegal activity and animal abuse.While the details about the experiment are still limited, documents from UMB reveal the project was suspended because animals were repeatedly denied pain relief after surgeries, they were not given proper time to recover after surgeries, the staff did not euthanize them after they reached their endpoints and the staff did not properly keep records. In a letter to the University of Maryland Board of Regents, SAEN said animals were not given any pain relief during a procedure involving cardiac arrest, and instead of giving the animals a three- to seven-day recovery period, they were given up to 24 hours. It also said animals were inspected by veterinarians and one animal required euthanasia, but was kept alive. All of this was discovered during multiple separate lab inspections done by UMB research administration. The letter also says during those inspections, the lab was notified of the serious consequences of not providing pain relief to the animals, but still did not get the necessary medications by the time another inspection took place, even though a surgery was going on at the time of the second inspection. After another unannounced inspection, changes were still not made, so the experiment was suspended on October 25. Now, SAEN is urging for UMB to do further research of abuse, terminate the project and refund all of the project support, .9 million, to the federal government. "This failed experiment must be terminated immediately,” said Michael A. Budkie, a co-founder and executive director of SAEN.  "The idea that a principal investigator repeatedly violated their own protocol and denied pain relief to animals indicates a total disregard for proper scientific procedures and total contempt for the authority of UMB Research Administration." SAEN is also calling for the results of the research to not be published because protocol was not followed.  2477

Breweries worldwide are using their craft to fight racial injustice, even while many struggle to keep their businesses open.“You realize making money off of this cider isn’t the end all be all. This money could be used for something much better and much greater than myself," said Sean Harris, owner of Serpentine Cider in San Diego.Crafted by Weathered Souls, an independent brewery in Texas, the Black is Beautiful initiative set out to raise awareness on police tactics and concerns about racial injustice.“We all are in this together, and we all want to do something to bring on some kind of change," said Harris. Harris joins more than 1,100 breweries around the world in the effort, with all proceeds from his Black is Beautiful cider going to the California Innocence Project (CIP). "There isn’t due process for everybody," said Jonathan Barbarin, co-founder of Thunderhawk Alements.Barbarin is also a CIP board member. "They’re kind of on the frontlines of the mistakes of the justice system, the people who’ve been wrongfully convicted, whether that was intentional or not," said Barbarin. Through free legal resources, CIP works to get people who've been wrongfully convicted out of prison. “At that time, I believed in the system, I believed the system was right and that all people were treated equally and fair," said Kiera Newsome. Newsome was just 16 when she learned how unjust the justice system could be after being charged with first-degree murder.“One thing I knew for sure was I’ll go to court, and they’ll figure this thing out, and I’ll be home with my family. And over 19 years later, I was still incarcerated," said Newsome. Attorneys say she was set up by gang members to take the fall for murder, despite being in school when the crime was committed and having an alibi. “That week I was going to end it all, and the week I was going to end it all, I got a letter from Justin Brooks saying they were going to take the case," Newsome remembers after CIP took on her case. However, it would be another 14 years until Newsome walked out of jail, and she’s still fighting to be fully exonerated.“Yes, this can happen to anyone, and the saddest part about it is there’s not enough Innocence Projects to hold each and every person that's innocent," said Newsome. "When you realize what you’ve been going through for the last seven months is just a financial thing, and what some people have gone through their entire lives, it humbles you," said Harris.
