POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - The memory of Poway synagogue shooting victim Lori Gilbert-Kaye is living on through random acts of kindness, which she was known for often doing. Over the weekend, Emily Tolliver went to the Poway Dollar Tree with her 11-year-old son, Shawn. "I was just walking down the aisles, and I saw a toy snake. I was originally thinking in my head, oh, this would be great to scare my mom!" said Shawn.But Shawn quickly realized that the toy was special, noticing a note on the back. "I went over to my mom, and I told her look this says, 'Enjoy this random act of kindness.' And then we kind of read the note together and noticed it was for the person who had died in the shooting," said Shawn. Taped to the back of the toy was a bill and a dime, just enough to pay for that toy.It also had a note from a 5-year-old which read: "In loving memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 8/10/58 - 4/27/19"After posting the experience on Facebook, hundreds of people were moved by the gesture of kindness. On the very day they discovered the note Lori would have turned 61. "I knew that the community would be touched by it, but I was surprised it brought people to tears. Just remembering her and that a 5-year-old was remembering her on her birthday, the way she wants to be remembered, and that's through helping others and doing acts of kindness," said Emily."It really made me feel like anyone can make a difference, at any age or anywhere at any time, you can make a difference," said Shawn. Just last week Gilbert-Kaye's husband spoke at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona, encouraging people there to do good for the world. "Here you have a wonderful, beautiful person where there was really no boundaries of religion, race or color, but she would help everyone, would look for people and help them," said Dr. Kaye. He said it was his wish to see random acts of kindness continue for his late wife. "Just little things in life, giving a little bit to charity, doing a good deed, is my way of preventing bad things from happening," said Dr. Kaye.The Tollivers say they plan to keep the happiness train going. (KGTV) -- Some neighbors in Poway are demanding answers after they say a huge wall showed up on a hillside over their homes, seemingly overnight and without notice."It definitely kills our view," said Aaron Jewell, who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 40 years. "It's an eyesore.""It looks a prison!" added Jeff Tarzia, another neighbor.The pre-fabricated "tilt-up" walls were erected last week, part of a 531,000 square-foot warehouse and distribution center slated to open next year, according to interviews with the city and the developer.The facility, named Vantage Point, will be the latest addition to the Poway Business Park along Scripps Poway Parkway. The business park already features more than 500 businesses and 18,000 employees.After the wall appeared last week, several neighbors complained on the social media app NextDoor that they had no idea the project was coming.Video from the Poway City Council shows the item was discussed November 7 for 14 minutes. Only one public speaker commented on the proposal: a commercial real estate broker who supported the project.According to the agenda documents, the city notified property owners within 500 feet of the upcoming council meeting, but aerial photographs show the only buildings nearby are in the business park. The concerned neighbors live in homes in a canyon several thousand feet north of the project, separated by open space.The city also filed a notice in the local newspaper about the upcoming hearing, said Poway Community Outreach Coordinator Rene Carmichael.City staff noted the land had been part of the Poway Business Park development plan since 1985. (KGTV) — A 27-acre parcel in Black Mountain Ranch once planned to be the site of a new middle school could instead turn into a Costco development.The Poway Unified School District board voted 4-0 on Thursday to pursue a long-term lease with Costco to transform the site into a mixed-use retail, restaurant, and housing complex, plus a warehouse. The district has twice declared the property at the northeast corner of Camino del Sur and Carmel Valley Road as surplus: first in 2012, and then reaffirmed in 2019. "This site has an extremely lucrative opportunity for the district and I, for one, don't see how we can turn this down," said board president Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff. "Let Costco go figure out what the community will accept."The move, however, is being met with concern from parents in the district. Chasmine Grismer, a district parent who has lived near the Black Mountain Ranch site for a decade, expressed concern over traffic, the environment, wildfire evacuation, and demand on schools. (KGTV) - A man died in a house fire in the rural East County community of Potrero early Monday morning.Cal Fire, San Diego County Fire, the Sheriff's Department Bomb Arson unit and ATF agents were called to the home at Coyote Holler Road and Round Potrero Road about 7:15 a.m.First responders tried CPR, but couldn't save the man. Cal Fire officials said they were working to identify the victim, who was found unconscious just outside the home. The fire did not spread to any other buildings, including a trailer home that was under construction next to the house that burned. The same area burned in the Harris Fire in 2007. 651
