The Scripps National Spelling Bee has released the 27 titles that are on its 2020-21 Great Words, Great Works booklist. The list of books is for students that span from first to eighth grade and will help students prep for their annual school spelling bee with a list of 450 words that are on the School Spelling Bee Study List each year."Parents and teachers are always looking (especially during the summer) for reading suggestions for kids," The Scripps National Spelling Bee said. "The Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes the important connection between reading and spelling. Before our competitors were great spellers, they were great readers. With that in mind, the Bee team intentionally selected its school-level spelling study words from engaging, age-appropriate books. The Bee organized those titles into the Great Words, Great Works book list. This year, students can expand their vocabularies and their world views while hearing from a diverse cast of characters on topics such as climate change, homelessness, immigration, gender identity, and the power of dreaming. Messages of friendship, hope, and overcoming adversity connect all 27 books, creating bridges between different cultures and life experiences."Here is a sampling of this year's Great Words, Great Works list:Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’oThe Dog Who Lost His Bark by Eoin ColferAda Twist and the Perilous Pants by Andrea BeatyWhales on Stilts by M.T. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Booking.com Tuesday in a landmark trademark case.In an 8-1 decision, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that determined that Booking.com is not a generic trademark because the term held meaning with consumers.Justice Stephen Breyer, a liberal judge, was the lone dissenting opinion.Other businesses including Cars.com, Dictionary.com, Newspapers.com and Wine.com said the outcome in the case would affect their ability to trademark their names too. 503

The unemployment rate has dipped below 4 percent for the first time since 2000.The United States added 164,000 jobs in April, the Labor Department reported Friday. That was slightly below what economists expected. Unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent, the lowest since December 2000."The employment situation continues to surprise everyone," said Robert Frick, chief economist with Navy Federal Credit Union. "Getting down to 3.9 is quite a marker."Wages grew 2.6 percent from a year earlier. That was also slightly below expectations. The report indicates another month of solid job growth for an economy that has been expanding for almost nine years — the second-longest streak on record.Hiring gains in April were broad. Professional and business services added 54,000 jobs, health care added 24,000, and manufacturing posted an increase of 24,000 jobs. The mining sector added 8,000 jobs, extending its gains. Employment in mining has risen by 86,000 since October 2016.The wage growth number seemed unlikely to alarm Wall Street, which has been worried in recent months about inflation. Stock futures were little changed after the report came out.Inflation is closing in on the Federal Reserve's 2% target, gasoline is heading toward a gallon, and companies are reporting cost pressures. Faster inflation could force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more quickly than planned.Frick believes unemployment will keep falling as businesses offer more attractive wages and benefits to fill openings."There's still hundreds of thousands of more people who will enter the workforce," he said. "I think we can get down to 3.5 percent."If unemployment falls much further, it will reach territory not seen in half a century. Unemployment fell as low as 3.8 percent in April 2000, in the waning days of the technology boom. The last time it was lower than that was 1969. 1898

The way doctors treat asthma in both children and adults just got a major update.Speaking to the Journal of the American Medical Association, respiratory experts said the changes in guidelines focus on six key areas, including improving asthma diagnosis, management, and treatment. It’s the first published update in 13 years.“So, one of the goals of our update was to address the issue of who can use intermittent inhaled corticosteroids and when used, are they as effective as daily use,” said Michelle M. Cloutier, MD with UConn Health. One of the biggest changes is that many patients may not need to use an inhaler every day anymore.“Especially those families of young children who don’t necessarily buy into using daily medication when their children are having intermittent symptoms,” said Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir, MD, MS with Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The new recommendations for inhaler use vary by age and severity of asthma, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about the new guidelines.Asthma affects nearly 5% of adults and 10% of children.During the pandemic, because of the higher death rate of asthma patients from COVID-19, more people have been seeking treatment for the condition. The average annual cost of asthma per person is more than ,200. But research has also shown among other things, regular use of medication and flu vaccines can reduce the chances of someone with asthma being hospitalized, driving up those costs. 1472

The U.S. recorded more than 120,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday as cases continue to skyrocket across the country.According to Johns Hopkins University, there were 121,888 new cases of COVID-19 recorded across the country on Thursday. That shatters the previous record of 102,000 cases that were reported on Wednesday.Johns Hopkins reports that more than 1,200 people died of the virus in the U.S. on Thursday, the highest death total since Sept. 15. The highest daily death total throughout the pandemic occurred on April 15, when 2,600 people died.According to Johns Hopkins, COVID-19 is currently spreading faster in the U.S. than it is anywhere else in the world. The U.S. has recorded an average of about 80,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last seven days; the country with the second-highest rate of new cases is India, with an average of about 45,000 new cases of the virus each day.Health officials warn that the U.S. is entering what could be the most dangerous and deadly period of the pandemic, as colder weather forces social gatherings indoors, where the virus is more easily spread.Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 9,606,369 cases reported in the US, 234,911 being fatal. Both totals mark the most of any country. 1258
