EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids. I if somebody did come through that fence and come into the house, there's no chance for anybody. Efforts to build a House of Mexico in Balboa Park's International Cottage area are nearing a critical deadline for fundraising. The group needs to raise 0,000 by the end of the month, or they may have to abandon their plans."We've been on this journey for a long time," says House of Mexico President Sonia Ruiz.The City Council approved plans in 2016 to add 9 "houses" to the cottage area, representing Mexico, the Philippines, Peru, Panama, Korea, India, Palestine, Turkey and Lebanon. They'll share five new buildings. But cost estimates for construction have risen considerably since the approval.Ruiz says it looks like each House will need to pay about a half million dollars for their share of construction."We got the permits back in November," she says. "If we don't start construction within 180 days, we lose the permit."Ruiz adds that applying for a new construction permit would be time consuming and expensive.The House of Mexico was one of the original members of Balboa Park's House of Nations in 1935. But they left the group in 1941. Aside from one year, they didn't re-join until 2004.Since then, the House of Mexico has operated as a non-profit group. They've held numerous events at Balboa Park to showcase Mexican culture. But a physical building would help them expand their mission."We could offer Spanish classes, cooking classes, dance classes," Ruiz says. "We want to have rotating art and culture exhibits in the house."People around Balboa Park were surprised to learn that San Diego's closest international neighbor didn't have its own building among the houses."It's pretty astonishing," says Mark Levy, who walks through the park every day. "We should definitely build that before we put up a wall.""We're so close," says park visitor Pati Stives. "We're such a small world at the end of the day. We are neighbors; they should be here."The House of Mexico is trying to raise the money by the end of May. They have a button on their website for donations, and they're also selling bracelets that say "I Love Mexico" at events. The bracelets are each, a sign of how they want the fundraising to be a community-wide effort."My hope is that we can build this house with small donations by community members," says Ruiz. (KGTV) -- An elderly man was struck by a car and killed as he crossed an El Cajon street Wednesday night.At around 11:30 p.m., El Cajon police and paramedics were called to the intersection of Jamacha and Main Street in response to a pedestrian hit by a vehicle.Police said a pickup truck was traveling northbound on Jamacha when it hit the 80 year-old-man. Officers say the victim's leg was amputated, and he was not breathing when they arrived at the scene.The victim, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.According to police, the driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors in the incident, police said. 746

EL CAJON (CNS and KGTV) - An East County man who admitted molesting an underage girl faces up to 10 years in state prison when he's sentenced March 27, prosecutors said.Shaun Crocker, 34, pleaded guilty Thursday at the El Cajon courthouse to two felony counts of committing a lewd act on a child for touching the unidentified victim, who was under the age of 14, inappropriately between September and November 2018.Prosecutors did not disclose the girl's exact age, nor would they confirm whether the defendant was related to sex offender Matthew Hedge, whose case drew headlines years after his conviction due to a judge's controversial decision to lift Hedge's sexually violent predator status and release him from custody without supervision.RELATED: Son of sex offender suspected of child molestation in San Diego CountyFollowing Crocker's arrest last year, a source told 10News that Crocker is Hedge's son.Hedge pleaded guilty in 1989 to molesting four children in the San Diego area and served 12 years in prison. He was committed to the sexually violent predator treatment program in 1997, but was released into outpatient treatment in 2005 in a trailer outside Donovan State Prison in Otay Mesa.His outpatient status was revoked within six weeks for violating terms of his release.After more than two years of in-patient hospital treatment, the court in October 2008 again granted Hedge's petition to be placed in outpatient treatment.
