Thousands of people are expected to pay their respects at the Supreme Court to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the women’s rights champion, leader of the court’s liberal bloc and feminist icon who died last week.Even with the court closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic and Washington already consumed with talk of Ginsburg’s replacement, the justice’s former colleagues, family, close friends and the public will have the chance Wednesday and Thursday to pass by the casket of the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court.The sad occasion is expected to bring together the remaining eight justices for the first time since the building was closed in March and they resorted to meetings by telephone.Ginsburg will lie in repose for two days at the court where she served for 27 years and, before that, argued six cases for gender equality in the 1970s.Following a private ceremony Wednesday in the court’s Great Hall, her casket will be moved outside the building to the top of the court’s front steps so that public mourners can pay their respects in line with public health guidance for the pandemic.Since her death Friday evening, people have been leaving flowers, notes, placards and all manner of Ginsburg paraphernalia outside the court in tribute to the woman who became known in her final years as the “Notorious RBG.” Court workers cleared away the items and cleaned the court plaza and sidewalk in advance of Wednesday’s ceremony.Following past practice at the tradition-laden court, Ginsburg’s casket is expected to arrive just before 9:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, the court said. Supreme Court police will carry it up the court steps, which will be lined former Ginsburg law clerks serving as honorary pallbearers.Chief Justice John Roberts and the other justices will be in the Great Hall when the casket arrives and is placed on the Lincoln Catafalque, the platform on which President Abraham Lincoln’s coffin rested in the Capitol rotunda in 1865. Beaty will be displayed nearby.It’s unclear whether President Donald Trump would visit the court before he leaves town Wednesday afternoon, though he did pay respects when Justice John Paul Stevens died last year and President Barack Obama visited the court after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016.The entrance to the courtroom, along with Ginsburg’s chair and place on the bench next to Roberts, have been draped in black, a longstanding court custom. They say what we saw earlier this year was historic.“Those mid-March weeks were the largest we've seen in the history of grocery shopping. I don't expect to ever see big waves like that again,” said Anne-Marie Roerink, President of 210 Analytics.People first stocked up on just cleaning items and then they started stocking up on all types of items, including pantry foods and that precious commodity – toilet paper.Roerink says that while it is possible people will stockpile again later this year, toilet paper may not be on the list. Cleaning items may become hard to find again. The timing of all this really depends on the virus and how cases evolve.“Should it come down to where the virus is big enough of a wave or we might go back down to a shelter in place, or where people feel more safe at home than they do out and about, I can see where our grocery spending will go back up,” said Roerink.Earlier this year, holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day actually contributed to the clearing of grocery shelves. They’re typically holidays where we go out to eat, but that wasn't really an option in most places. So, people had to improvise.“All of a sudden, retail had to absorb all those dollars to take care of mom and cook her a fun brunch or dinner, so we had an enormous peak again for Mother's Day and Father's Day,” said Roerink.That means holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas could change how things work out at the grocery store as well.Generally, supply and demand has started to normalize, but grocery sales are still about 10% higher than what they normally are. Thousands have signed two petitions asking the hometown of Chadwick Boseman to replace a Confederate monument with a statue of the late actor.One petition has garnered more than 14,000 signatures, and the other petition has over 7,000 signatures.Boseman lost his 4-year battle with colon cancer on Friday, his family said in a statement.Boseman portrayed Black icons Jackie Robinson and James Brown before finding fame as the Black Panther in several Marvel movies."Mr. Boseman is without question an American treasure, and his accolades go on and on," one of the petitions said about the late actor. "It only fits that his work is honored in the same place that birthed him."The Confederate statue in question is located in of county courthouse in Anderson, South Carolina.According to the Independent Mail, the monument falls under the state's Heritage Act, which means to remove the statue, the act requires a two-thirds vote by the state legislature. 962

There's a new program aimed at helping Black and Latinx students succeed.The Equity in Education Initiative was built through a partnership between Walmart and North Carolina A&T State University.The program acknowledges many of these students start at a disadvantage, because they go through under-funded school districts.“These students are coming in sometimes with academic gaps that are due to no fault of their own. It's not a difference in ability, it's just a difference in their zip code,” said Kevin James, Dean of the Deese College of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T.The program is broken up into four focus areas, addressing specific needs of different students. They include financial resources and mentorship while in school, and then network building to create career opportunities their white counterparts may already have.“So many people actually obtain their jobs through networks, because they know someone who knows someone, and many of these students, most of them come in without those built in networks and their families don't have those networks,” said James.The hope is that the positive effects of the program will extend outside of school, allowing successful students to invest and give back.“It's not just about the impact on the student. It's about multi-generational impact on families and about extending those impacts into communities that often times have been under resourced,” said James.Some parts of the program, like the Black Male Initiative, will make resources automatically available to students.There will be an application process for the Leadership Cohort and scholarships.The program starts early next year. 1683

But Uber plans to take delivery to a new level by using drones.The company reportedly plans to launch a food delivery service using drones by 2021.   How soon could this happen? Futurist Thomas Frey says it’s coming whether we want it or not.   "With all the emerging technology, we still have to work our way through the crappy stages before we get to the good stuff," says Frey.   Delivering food to anyone anywhere is a challenge  "Delivering something like food is a lot messier and a lot more time sensitive than delivering a product we're getting from Walmart or Amazon or something, says Frey."Part of the problem with drones is that we have to get the FAA to OK deliveries like this, and that is not a simple thing to do."   And with the convenience, comes a price.  "Eliminate a lot of human labor in doing something like this, so the reasons companies are pushing this so hard is it gives them a competitive advantage,” explains Frey. “It takes much of the labor costs out of this arrangement."  Overall, the good side of technology usually outweighs the bad, Frey says."See, drones can be very dangerous. The same ones that deliver foods or products to your door step they can also deliver bombs or poison or spy on your kids,” Frey says. “We have to guard against abuses of this technology."  Before this can happen, companies will be need to get a license and go through security training in order to get clearance.   1578
