BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China (PBOC), or the central bank, auctioned 50 billion yuan (7.61 billion U.S. dollars) of three-month bills at a yield of 2.7944 percent on Thursday, temporarily easing speculation of an approaching interest rate hike.The yield on three-month bills stood unchanged from last week at 2.7944 percent.Also, PBOC sold 60 billion yuan (9.13 billion U.S. dollars) worth of 91-day repurchase agreements to banks on Thursday with a yield of 2.8 percent.Offsetting the 181 billion yuan (27.55 billion U.S. dollars) of bills and repurchase agreements that matured, PBOC took 49 billion yuan (7.46 billion U.S. dollars) of liquidity out of the money market this week through open market operations on Tuesday and Thursday.Market analysts have been watching PBOC's open market operations closely this week as the yield of its one-year bill sold on Tuesday exceeded the benchmark interest rate of one-year deposits, which some analysts interpret as a reason for an imminent interest rate hike.Chen Lan, an analyst with Guotai Junan Securities, said higher yields on central bank bills would boost PBOC's ability to absorb liquidity from the market amidst the country's economic tightening efforts."But the hike of interest rates is not an imminent task for the central bank amid the slowdown of China's industrial investment in February, which weakened consumer confidence, and economic uncertainty overseas," Chen said.China's industrial value-added output grew 14.1 percent in the first two months of this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced on Friday.The growth rate during the first two months was up by 0.6 percentage points compared to that in December of last year, according to figures released by the NBS.Chen predicted that PBOC will reduce its frequency to raise banks' reserve requirement ratio in coming months but said the rate hike expectation would continue this year as the government is hoping to curb the red hot property market and soaring inflation.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose 4.9 percent year on year in February, adding more monetary tightening pressure to the government.

WASHINGTON, April 3 (Xinhua) -- In the largest study of its kind, researchers from a consortium led by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, the University of Miami, and the Boston University School of Medicine, identified four new genes linked to Alzheimer's disease. The findings appeared Sunday in the current issue of Nature Genetics.Each gene individually adds to the risk of having this common form of dementia later in life. These new genes offer a portal into what causes Alzheimer's disease and is a major advance in the field.The study, conducted by the Alzheimer's Disease Genetics Consortium, reports genetic analysis of more than 11,000 people with Alzheimer's disease and a nearly equal number of elderly people who have no symptoms of dementia. Three other consortia contributed confirming data from additional people, bringing the total number of people analyzed to over 54,000. The consortium also contributed to the identification of a fifth gene reported by other groups of investigators from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and other European countries.The study is the result of a large collaborative effort with investigators from 44 universities and research institutions in the United States, led by Gerard Schellenberg at University of Pennsylvania."This is the culmination of years of work on Alzheimer's disease by a large number of scientists, yet it is just the beginning in defining how genes influence memory and intellectual function as we age. We are all tremendously excited by our progress so far, but much remains to be done, both in understanding the genetics and in defining how these genes influence the disease process," Schellenberg said.Until recently, only four genes associated with late-onset Alzheimer's have been confirmed, with the gene for apolipoprotein E-e4, APOE-e4, having the largest effect on risk. The Nature Genetics studies add another four -- MS4A, CD2AP, CD33, and EPHA1 -- and contribute to identifying and confirming two other genes, BIN1 and ABCA7, thereby doubling the number of genes known to contribute Alzheimer's disease.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Oracle Corp. on Monday announced that its co-president Safra Catz is taking the additional position as the software giant's chief financial officer (CFO), following the resignation of its current CFO Jeff Epstein.Epstein was named Oracle's CFO in September 2008, and had reported directly to Catz. Oracle didn't give details about Epstein's departure.Catz joined Oracle in April 1999 and has been its president since January 2004. She previously served as the company's CFO from November 2005 to September 2008."Safra already has the long-standing confidence of our employees, our Board and our shareholders," Oracle's chief executive officer Larry Ellison said in a statement, adding that " there is no more logical choice for CFO.""The CFO function has reported to Safra for a number of years and she's acted as Oracle's CFO in the past. WASHINGTON, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Early initiation of antiretroviral treatment in people infected with HIV prevents them from transmitting the virus to their partners, according to findings released Thursday from a large-scale international clinical study.The study, known as HPTN 052, was designed to evaluate whether antiretroviral drugs can prevent sexual transmission of HIV infection among couples in which one partner is HIV-infected and the other is not. The results are the first of their kind from a major randomized clinical trial.Led by Myron Cohen, of the University of North Carolina, the research found that treating HIV-infected individuals with antiretroviral therapy (ART) when their immune systems are still relatively healthy led to a 96 percent reduction in HIV transmission to their partners.This critical new finding convincingly demonstrates that early treatment of infected individuals can have a major impact on the spread of the epidemic.Study investigators enrolled 1,763 couples who were not eligible for ART by WHO standards in nine countries around the world. All couples were at least 18 years of age. The vast majority of the couples (97 percent) were heterosexual, which precludes any definitive conclusions about effectiveness in men who have sex with men.Couples were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. In the first group, the HIV-infected partner initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART) as soon as the couple enrolled in the study (the immediate treatment group); in the second group, infected partners did not begin ART until their CD4+ counts fell to between 200 and 250 cells/mm3 or they developed an AIDS-related illness (the delayed treatment group). Couples in both groups received HIV primary care, counseling and condoms.Results of this research study, which was scheduled to conclude in 2015, are being released early, after the independent data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) determined that the benefits of early treatment were clear.
