(KGTV) - The body of a San Diego Navy veteran reported missing was found in a Dallas suburb this week, and Texas investigators he had been dead for three years. Ronald Wayne White, 51, was a defense contractor who served on the USS Nimitz in the 1980s. He vanished in 2016. “My son would call me at least twice a month,” said White’s mother Doris Stevens told WFAA. “He would call me from Egypt. He would call me from the Philippines. He would call me right from Dallas.” RELATED: San Diego mother calls on community to sponsor wreaths honoring veteransInvestigators searched White’s last known address but his mother, who lives in New York, did not know he had moved to DeSoto, near Dallas. An employee of the apartment complex went to the unit to discover why the tenant wasn’t using any water and found White’s body on the kitchen floor. "It is sadness....to see that a veteran, a decorated veteran, had to go out like this,” said Jerry Hannon, a friend of white. DeSoto Police said there was no sign of foul play. White had a month-to-month lease with the money automatically withdrawn from his account and his apartment was well-insulated, according to police. "I can't hardly cope with it to be honest with you. And if I wasn't around them I probably wouldn’t…I can't hardly deal with it,” said Stevens. Associated Press contributed to this report. 1569

(KGTV) -- Wet winters are no longer a sign that California will have a reduced risk of wildfires, according to a new study. The study claims that from 1600 and 1903, the position of the North Pacific jet stream over California was linked to the amount of precipitation and the severity of the following wildfire season. After 1904, the connection between winter moisture brought by the jet stream and the severity of wildfire season weakened. RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological SurveyAccording to the study, the connection between added moisture and wildfire risk disappeared altogether after 1977. Now, fuel buildup from decades of fire suppression and rising temperatures from climate change means any year could see large wildfires, the report states. "The moisture availability over California is still strongly linked to the position of the jet stream, but fire no longer is," said co-author Valerie Trouet, an associate professor of dendrochronology at the University of Arizona Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. RELATED: Mega storm could cause billions in damage to California, report showsTrouet says the wet 2016-2017 winter is proof of the claim. The added moisture that winter was followed by many large fires in 2017 including the Tubbs and Thomas fires. In 2017, 24 people died and nearly 7,000 structures were destroyed by fires. "It's not either climate change or historical fire management--it's really a combination of the two that's creating a perfect storm for catastrophic fires in California," Trouet said. 1578
(KGTV) - The death of actor Luke Perry from a stroke is raising awareness about the health issue among younger patients. Strokes, which are typically associated with the elderly, are appearing more in people under 50 years old, according to Sharp Health Care. According to the American Heart Association, a stroke happens when a clot in a blood vessel stops blood from reaching the brain. Doctors believe the increase is due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes, and poor management of blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Risk factors include smoking, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. RELATED: Actor Luke Perry dies at age 52 after suffering strokeDoctors say it’s crucial to recognize the signs of a stroke: sudden severe headache, trouble walking, confusion, weakness, numbness, and difficulty speaking and seeing. The early warning signs can be remembered as F.A.S.T.:- Face drooping- Arm weakness- Speech difficulty- Time to call 911 “There is this ‘golden window,’ usually within the four and a half hours after the onset of stroke symptoms where people who receive medical treatment during this time have a better chance of survival than those who don’t,” says Dr. Amirhassan Bahreman of Sharp Grossmont Hospital. The only FDA-approved treatment for ischemic strokes dissolves the clot and improves blood flow, according to the American Stroke Association. However, it must be administered within three hours. Health care professionals encourage anyone showing signs of a stroke to call 911. 1522
