If you couldn’t match it to a suspect or database, that was sort of the end of the road,” said Parabon’s CEO Steve Armentrout. “With Snapshot, we are able to take that DNA and use it as a genetic witness to predict eye color, hair color, skin color, freckling, even face shape, to provide police with some description of the person that left that DNA behind.”Parabon originally got its start in this type of work after the Department of Defense put out a solicitation asking for help in using DNA for counterterrorism efforts, but it wasn’t until 2015 that Parabon made their resources available to police departments nationwide.“We knew it could help active investigations,” Armentrout said. “Getting this kind of information upfront could make law enforcement more efficient.”But he believes where the technology really changes the game is in regards to decades-old cold cases.“To see it being used to go back and solve these 25 year old crimes is surprising and exciting,” he said.One of Parabon's oldest "success stories" stems from a 1997 rape and murder of a Costa Mesa, California woman. In 2016, they produced a Snapshot from the DNA found, and "within weeks," police had gone back to the drawing board.Just last year, they identified the man they believe is their suspect, and he's now living in Mexico. The officer found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, one of them identified as off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer Juan José Diaz."It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm the off-duty LAPD Officer has passed away as a result of the shooting. (KGTV) — Newly released video shows the moment a Portland high school coach disarmed a student who brought a loaded shotgun to school in May.Keanon Lowe, Parkrose High School's head football and track coach, was in a classroom full of students when the gunman, identified as Angel Granados Dias, came in with shotgun on May 17, 2019, according to Portland police.In the video, Lowe brings Dias into a school hallway after appearing to disarm the student. Lowe is seen holding the shotgun before handing it off to another staff member. The coach continues to hold the student and embrace him in a hug, as the staff member leaves with the firearm and students flee from the classroom.Lowe, a former Oregon Ducks football player and NFL coach, says he lunged for the gun with both hands inside the classroom when he realized what was happening.The coach said he told Dias he was there for him and that his life was worth saving. Investigators say Dias was suffering a mental health crisis and only intended to hurt himself, Portland ABC-affiliate KATU reported."Then it was just me and that student. It was a real emotional time. It was emotional for him, it was emotional for me," Lowe told KATU in May. "In that time, I felt compassion for him.
