SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sockers announced Saturday that former team and North American Soccer League executive Jack Daley has died.Daley, 82, died on March 7 at his San Diego home, the team said. A cause of death was not immediately released.From 1981 to 1984, Daley was a managing partner for the Sockers, and prior to that, general manager of the Toronto Metros from 1971 to 1973 and then NASL Seattle Sounders from 1974 to 1981.During his time in Seattle, he helped the team to its first two Soccer Bowl championship games and iconic players to the city, according to the Seattle Times. He's credited with helping cement the Sounders as a household name in Seattle, before the league folded. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The trial started Wednesday for two San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies facing criminal charges after an arrest in Vista. Deputies Nicholas Morgan and Joshua Nahan are charged with assault for what District Attorney Summer Stephan calls illegal actions during the encounter. Gerardo Martinez Jr. and his father were taken into custody last May after the deputies responded to a domestic violence call. Part of the 911 call was played for jurors during opening statements Tuesday. The panel also saw cell phone video of the arrest recorded by a neighbor. The now-viral video shows Deputy Nahan push Martinez Sr. into a fence while handcuffed. Martinez Jr. was repeatedly struck in the head by Deputy Morgan while on a concrete sidewalk. “Law enforcement officers hold a position of trust in our community and are required to abide by the rules in the exercise of their powers. The evidence on which the charges are based shows the force used by the two deputies exceeded the legal line, violating that public trust. For justice to thrive, it is important that no one is above the law,” Stephan said in November. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego History Center is commemorating a landmark moment in the gay rights movement: the Stonewall uprising in New York. Fifty years ago, a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village sparked a violent confrontation between law enforcement and gay rights activists. Although the riots happened on the other side of the country, the West Coast had a role in fighting for change. “If nothing else, it is a marker in historical time with a clearly defined before and after,” said Dr. Lillian Faderman. Faderman said Stonewall was “not the first time that gay people fought back.” She curated an exhibit called LGBTQ San Diego: Stories and Struggles, tracing the local groups that advocated for LGBTQ rights. The Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis both advocated for gay rights in the 1950s and 60s. Faderman’s exhibit highlights their work, and that of individuals who called for change. The exhibit will be open at the San Diego History Center until next year. 1022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirty-seven people were charged with drug and firearms trafficking throughout North San Diego County, according to unsealed indictments — in some case, feet away from schools.More than 100 members of the North County Regional Gang Task Force, the FBI SWAT team, and other local agencies arrested 18 of the 37 defendants Wednesday.Heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl and firearms, including a semi-automatic pistol, revolvers, and a two AR-15 style assault rifles, were also seized during the arrests, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of California.Officials said the drugs and firearms being trafficked were stored and sold in North County, including near Libby Lake Park and several schools: Jefferson Middle School, Clair W. Burgener Academy, Mission Elementary School, San Marcos High School, and Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School.Wednesday's arrests are part of a federal and local investigation into street gangs operating in Encinitas, San Marcos, Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Escondido, and elsewhere. Many of those arrested reportedly have ties to the Mexican Mafia, officials said.In total, 27 of the 37 being charged are in custody, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of California. The remaining 10 are being sought."We have a special resolve to go after gangs that have the audacity to operate on the boundaries of our schools, where children play and learn," U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said in a release.
