BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and Chile celebrated the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties at a reception here Wednesday.Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong and visiting Chilean president Sebastian Pinera attended the reception, which was held by Chilean Embassy.China was ready to take the opportunity of this anniversary to push forward Sino-Chilean relations, Liu said when addressing the reception.Noting Chile was the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic ties with China, Liu said the Chinese government attached great importance to developing the bilateral ties from strategic perspective.Pinera, on his first China visit since taking office as Chilean president in March, expressed the willingness to expand cooperation and friendship with China, and he hailed the progress made in bilateral cooperation since the two countries forged ties in 1970.Chile is China's second biggest trade partner in Latin America and China is Chile's biggest trade partner. Bilateral trade last year rose 2.1 percent to 17.72 billion dollars.China and Chile forged a comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2004.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese and U.S. military officials will exchange visits in 2011, a Chinese Defense Ministry official said here Friday.The two sides have agreed that U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will visit China from Jan. 10 to Jan. 14, 2011, and Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), will visit the United States at a mutually convenient date in 2011, Guan Youfei, deputy director of the ministry's Foreign Affairs Office, told a press conference.The news briefing was held after defense consultations between China and the United States on Friday, which was co-chaired by Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the PLA, and U.S. Under Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy.Guan Youfei, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chinese Defense Ministry, gestures during a press conference in Washington Dec. 10, 2010. BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's health care reform funds - 850 billion yuan (126 billion U.S. dollars) over three years - were mainly used to build a basic medical insurance system for urban and rural residents, said Minister of Finance Xie Xuren Friday.Xie made the remarks at the 18th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), a bimonthly session that began Dec. 20 and will end Dec. 25.The government in April 2009 unveiled a 850 billion yuan three-year plan for national health care reform.With the funds, the government promised universal access to basic health insurance, the introduction of an essential drugs system, improved primary health care facilities, equitable access to basic public health services and a pilot reforms for state-run hospitals.Chinese lawmakers attend a meeting of the 18th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 24, 2010. GUIYANG, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and 34 others injured in an explosion that ripped through an Internet cafe in southwest China's Guizhou Province Saturday night, according to local police.The explosion occurred at around 10:30 p.m. in an Internet cafe in the downtown area of the Kaili City of Miao-Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan, said Guizhou's provincial public security department.Victims have been pulled out of the debris and the injured rushed to hospitals, said the department.Rescue workers at the scene said the powerful blast had turned the cafe into "complete ruins" and also destroyed windows of nearby residential buildings.The police are investigating the cause of the explosion and search and rescue work is still underway.
