New York City hit a major milestone over the weekend in its fight against the coronavirus after recording its first 24-hour period without a COVID-19 death in months, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday.Speaking during a coronavirus briefing Monday morning, de Blasio warned that COVID-19 is “far from beaten,” especially considering the surge in cases in many cities and states around the country.“No one can celebrate but we can at least take a moment to appreciate that everyone of you did so much to get us to this point: 24 hours when no one died, let's have many more days like that,” the mayor said. “And it’s a reminder, of course, that this disease is such a formidable foe that it’s been months and months since we’ve had a day like this.”Preliminary data from the city Health Department indicates that the period of no COVID-19 deaths was on Saturday. NEW YORK (AP) — Universal Music unveiled a previously unheard and unreleased song by the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.The record label announced the track, "Time Waits for No One," on Thursday. It was originally recorded in 1986 for the concept album of the musical "Time" with musician Dave Clark.A video to accompany the song was also released and includes unseen performance footage of Mercury. It was recorded in April 1986 at London's Dominion Theatre.Mercury died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991 at 45. NEW YORK (AP) — A 75-foot Norway spruce has arrived at New York City’s Rockefeller Center to serve as one of the world’s most famous Christmas trees. The tree was trucked in Saturday morning and lifted into place by a crane. The tree will be decorated over the coming weeks. NEW YORK CITY — An ailing swan in Queens was able to get help thanks to a trained wildlife rescuer and the New York City subway.Ariel Cordova-Rojas was on a bike ride around Jamaica Bay last Thursday when she noticed a swan sitting apart from others along the shore."It seemed odd, but swans can be solitary," Cordova-Rojas said. "As I got closer, she stayed stationary. They're usually aggressive and territorial, you can't get close without them trying to attack, and I knew something was wrong."She estimates she carried the 17-pound bird about a mile to the ranger station. Two Good Samaritans helped give her a lift to the subway station at Howard Beach, which she rode about 10 stops to Nostrand Ave;.Cordova-Rojas has worked at the Wild Bird Fund on Columbus Ave. in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and knew they could care for the swan there. More of her friends helped complete the trip by car.Once arriving at the Wild Bird Fund, researchers diagnosed her with lead poisoning.
