Called “Salt Drift Pointe” the owners say they wanted to honor the industrial history driven by the old salt ponds that helped move the region from farming to industry. At least 300 employees with the district opted for early retirement, some of whom retired this December. Peter Bishop has worked for the district for more than 17 years as a math and science teacher. RELATED: Lack of oversight, massive spending and even larger deficits continue to plaque SUHSDBishop says he, along with hundreds of others, was offered early retirement after learning that the district was operating at a deficit. “There’s always a little bit of emotion when you go through a life transition like that. I’m sorry to leave the kids, sorry to leave my colleagues, those are the folks I’m going to miss, but, you know, time to move on.”Bishop expects that there will be an impact to schools throughout the district as experienced teachers move out and younger, less experienced ones move in. The teachers that retired were all long-term teachers. Very experienced. The offer comes as the district figures out how to deal with financial woes. (KGTV) - A new exhibit at the Chula Vista Library's Heritage Museum is telling the stories of the South Bay's Holocaust Survivors."History repeats itself, and if you don't recall it, then it's going to happen again," says Curator Sandra Scheller.The exhibit, "RUTH: Remember Us The Holocaust," focuses on Scheller's mother, Ruth. She survived three concentration camps before coming to Chula Vista. It also features 11 other survivors who called the area home over the last 70+ years.Scheller says only five survivors are left in the South Bay, and she wants to make sure no one forgets what they went through, or how they made Chula Vista a better place throughout their lives."This was a labor of love," Scheller says. "I've loved every second of it."The exhibit features photos of the survivors, artifacts from Jewish life before, during and after the Holocaust, and personal touches from Scheller's family. It includes replicas of the yellow stars her grandparents wore during World War II, clothing and even a tooth from her grandmother."She had to break this tooth out because it had some gold in it," Scheller explains. "The Nazis would have killed her for this gold."The exhibit opens Sunday, January 12 and will remain on display throughout the year. Far from pushing his father to speak openly about his inner turmoil, the younger's death left Ronald Hummons paralyzed and afraid."When you talk about a parent who lost their child to suicide, it's like, ‘What did you do wrong?'" Hummons said. "Judgement. We're placed on a judgement list."Hummons' son was TrePierre Hummons, the man responsible for the shooting death of Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim on June 19, 2015.That judgment, or the fear of it, shamed him into a silence he now wants to break for everyone who has seriously considered ending his or her own life. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-of-the-art hospital is nearly complete in the South Bay. The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is expanding, adding a seven-story hospital to the current facility. "I think this is just everything for this community, right now we're really the only ones investing down here in the South Bay, in Chula Vista," says Matt Teichner, Sharp Chula Vista Senior Project Manager."Everyone who comes in here gets seen regardless of your ability to pay, we see people from both sides of the border here, and we are just full to the brim every day right now."It will be the first new hospital in San Diego's South Bay in more than 40 years.Planners say patient safety and infection control was the number one factor when designing the new hospital. The new hospital features advanced operating rooms as well as innovative technologies.
