SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With COVID-19 cases spiking in parts of the country, some of the largest testing providers are struggling to keep up with the demand, complicating efforts to isolate infected individuals and trace their contacts.Quest Diagnostics announced Monday its turnaround time for most test results had expanded to four to six days, back to where it was in the beginning of April. Quest said its turnaround time for priority tests -- those for hospitalized patients and symptomatic healthcare workers -- remained at one day.San Diego County operates 33 free testing sites for COVID-19, but ABC 10News found turnaround times can vary.Have you waited more than 7 days for COVID-19 test results? Email our reporter.Team10’s Adam Racusin got his negative test results from the site in Lakeside back in three days.The county’s goal is to report all test results within three days, although the current average is between three and five days for non-priority tests, according to County Health and Human Services Agency Director Nick Macchione.The county typically reports priority tests within 24 to 48 hours for vulnerable populations like individuals at skilled nursing facilities and first responders, he said.I visited the testing site in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot and got my negative test results back in seven days, after I placed a call to the County Nurse Line inquiring about them.“It’s about resources,” said County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten.Wooten suggested that the recent spike in demand could be playing a role in increased wait times for results.The county uses its own lab to test samples, but when the lab gets backed up it sends samples to private labs that have been inundated with demand.In addition to Quest, Lab Corp and CVS Minute Clinic have reported long waits linked to high demand in recent days.In hard-hit Arizona, ABC News reported that some people are waiting up to 10 days for results."When we tell them, go home, self-isolate, quarantine yourself until we get back to you and that period of time is a week to 10 days, people start to kind of diverge from those suggestions within a few days,” said Dr. Tyler Smith, a professor and epidemiologist at National University.He said not only can testing delays lead to more infections if people waiting for results venture out in public, the added time makes contact tracing more difficult.There are already signs of strain on the county’s ability to do contact tracing: as of Monday, the county was able to launch just 57 percent of its case investigations within 24 hours, setting off one of its warning triggers.The county says it is taking steps to speed up testing in its lab, including adding staff and securing new testing equipment that has yet to arrive. The county has also added shifts at the lab, going with up to three shifts a day to process specimens.As the number of cases grows in San Diego County, there could be future delays in turnaround time at the county lab, “but likely not beyond where it is today,” said spokesman Tim McClain.“Everyone should be practicing social distancing, good handwashing and wearing of a face covering,” he said via email. “Individuals who felt symptomatic or otherwise had a strong belief they had the virus should isolate themselves and follow other public health precautions until the results come back.” 3362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two guided-missile destroyers were simultaneously dry docked at a Barrio Logan shipyard Wednesday. The USS Stethem and USS Decatur were lifted together inside the BAE Systems’ “Pride of California” dry dock. The dry-dock is 950 feet long, 160 feet wide and has a lifting capacity of 55,000 tons. The destroyers each are 505-feet-long and displace about 9,000 tons, according to BAE Systems. Crews will conduct repairs on the ships’ hulls, internal ballast and storage tanks, ventilation, propulsion and engineering systems, and living spaces. The ships should be re-floated by April 2020, BAE systems reports. 636

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two women who worked as massage therapists at the Grand Del Mar are suing the resort’s parent company, claiming the spa allowed them to be sexually harassed by male clients. Christina Murphy and Madeline Flores made allegations this week of sexual harassment, failure to prevent harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation against FHR GDM Hotel Management Company LLC. The women’s claims involve two spa clients, Steve Hodsdon and Juan Pablo Mariscal, who the women say made inappropriate advances during scheduled massage appointments. The Grand allowed clients to disregard protocols for keeping themselves covered and repeatedly exposed themselves to therapists, according to a court document filed by the women’s attorney. The male clients also made sexually suggestive comments and gestures and propositioned their therapists for sexual favors, the document said. The legal complaint also details issues Flores and Murphy said they addressed to the spa’s lead massage therapist, manager, director, and human resources representative. The Grand “ignored the complaints and tried to brush them under the rug to keep these male clients coming to the Spa,” the document reads. Both Flores and Murphy used administrative channels to make complaints in Aug. 2018, filing sexual harassment complaints with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. On Feb. 26, 2019, Murphy and Flores amended their complaints to include a claim of construction discharge in violation of FEHA or wrongful termination, respectively, and the DFEH closed their cases. The women say they suffered emotional distress, mental anguish, nervousness, grief, anxiety, worry, shock, humiliation, and shame.In a statement sent to 10News, Murphy said, "From the beginning, the Grand Del Mar makes it clear that as massage therapists, we should feel privileged to work on such high-end clientele. This creates a power differential where the guests have all the power and the therapists are powerless to challenge inappropriate conduct. The sexual intimidation by these male clients caused me so much fear – fear of what these men were capable of and fear of retaliation by the Grand for reporting them. But I had to speak up to protect myself and my coworkers. When it became obvious that the Grand was not going to protect me, I did the only thing I knew would keep this from happening to me again – I quit."Flores said in the same statement, "What happened to me and Christina never should have happened. The Grand should have taken action to stop this harassment the first time it received complaints about these men. But the Grand did nothing and we ultimately paid the price. The Grand made me feel unsafe at work when they were supposed to be the ones to protect me. This was a profession that I went to school for and that I loved, and now, I have lost my passion for it. I was scared to come forward but ultimately, I felt I had to come forward because I do not want what happened to me to happen to other massage therapists."Their attorney, Alreen Haeggquist, with Haeggquist & Eck, LLP said, “The law is simple and straightforward: an employer has a duty to protect its employees from harassment. But in the face of multiple detailed complaints by its female massage therapists over a period of years, the Grand has chosen to instead protect the perpetrators. The Grand has made a clear choice: the tens of thousands of dollars its predatory male clients spend at the Hotel is far more important than the safety of its female employees. For the right amount of money, the Grand will ignore clients who remove all draping, grind on the massage table, expose their erect penises and ask its therapists for prostate massages. Over the past few years, the Grand has refused to accept any responsibility for its systemic failures. They have had multiple opportunities to do the right thing and protect their female massage therapists – and time after time, they’ve failed to do so. Well, time’s up.”The plaintiffs believe no fewer than six massage therapists may have been victimized, the court document says. The hotel responded in a statement of its own, "Fairmont Grand Del Mar acts diligently to investigate employee complaints and is confident that there was no wrongdoing by the hotel in connection with this matter. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames.The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres.Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley.The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines.
