SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Fire crews continued mopping up what was left of the Willow Fire in Rancho San Diego Thursday, as they remain on high alert during this Red Flag Warning.One home was destroyed in the brush fire, while six others were damaged when the flames, pushed by wind quickly moved up a hillside to Willow Glen Drive Wednesday.The fire prompted evacuations. Neighbors told ABC 10News they were scrambling to get out in the middle of the night, unsure of what to grab."I happened to be on scene first with our fire chief and it was about five acres when I first got here and quickly grew, and was in the backyards of some of these homes in 5 to 10 minutes," said Andy Lawler, San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief.Crews were able to quickly gain control of the flames, making airdrops when safe, and saving homes — despite the wind working against them.Over in San Marcos, the Sycamore Fire grew to three acres Thursday afternoon but firefighters were ready to attack it from all angles.Fire departments across San Diego County have upped their staffing and remain on high alert for the next few days."We have dedicated crews on these brush rigs so they have a quicker response throughout the city of San Diego," San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief R.J. Hartman said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Francis Parker School officials say a vendor that handles some of the school's backup data was victim of a ransomware attack in May. The school says third-party cloud computing provider, Blackbaud, Inc., notified them on July 16 of the cyberattack. Criminals demanded payment in return for destroying information they copied from Blackbaud's database, the school said.School officials warned parents that the compromised database may have included contact information, birth dates, and a history of relationships with the school, including donation dates and amounts. The school said the attackers did not access credit card information, social security, or other personal financial information and had no access to the school's systems.Blackbaud paid the ransomware and says based on the nature of the incident and investigations with law enforcement, there's no reason to believe any data went beyond the cybercriminals or was, or will be, misused.Francis Parker officials said they are reevaluating their relationship with Blackbaud. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fernanda Whitworth watched her husband Ralph battle cancer for years."He couldn't swallow, he couldn't talk or basically eat. So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem. Not only does HPV account for six different cancer types, almost 100 percent of cervical cancers and in men, now those instances are rising for head and neck cancer, " said Dr. Ezra Cohn, who is part of the foundation's medical team. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that about 14 million people get a new HPV infection every year in the U.S. Nearly all men and women who have ever had sex get at least one type of genital HPV at some time in their lives. The Immunotherapy Foundation has focused its efforts on three categories:  1272

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For three decades, the Salvation Army has been serving Thanksgiving meals to those in need.This year, it looks a bit different."Just because we have masks and social distancing, their needs haven't changed," said volunteer Elena Misner.Misner says she volunteers on Thanksgiving and Christmas."When I was starting out on my own, the Salvation Army helped me with classes, clothes, services," she said.She says without that initial help, her life might look a lot different."When I got older I found this opportunity," Misner said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of men in high heels strutted through downtown San Diego on Saturday morning to support victims of domestic violence.The 11th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event started with the mile walk and ended with a family festival featuring face painting, live music and more.“It is a lighthearted way to bring awareness to domestic violence,” said Heather Frinlay, the Chief Operating Officer of the YWCA of San Diego County. The morning of family fun raised money for programs that provide victims of domestic violence resources like housing, counseling, and legal aid.“This is not a private issue; this is a community issue,” said Frinlay. “We still have one in four women, and now one in seven men experiencing domestic violence in their lifetimes.”San Diego County reported more than 17,000 incidents of domestic violence in 2017. 871
