The National Hurricane Center said it is currently monitoring three storms that could potentially develop into tropical cyclones in the coming days, adding more anxiety to what has already been an extremely active hurricane season.One of the systems, located just off the North Carolina coast, became the 15th tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season Monday afternoon. The depression is expected to form into a tropical storm in the coming days, and pass to the north of Bermuda. The potential tropical storm is not expected to affect the United States mainland. The National Weather Service defines a tropical depression as a low-pressure system that is being fueled by warm, tropical water and is rotating around a "well-defined" center. Once these storms have sustained winds of at least 39 mph, they become a "named" tropical storm."Nana" is the name that will be given to the next tropical storm, followed by "Omar" and "Paulette." There have been 13 named storms so far this hurricane season. At this time last year, there had only been five named storms.A second system is brewing in the Caribbean sea. "She did get some limited information health-wise, but for me, it's very important for us to find out as much as we can about our family history and our health."Jerson heard about a new test from Ancestry — one of the leading genealogy services — that provides a DNA analysis of a user's health. Jerson sent off the saliva sample test and is awaiting results.Dr. Sarah South, the Vice President of Ancestry Health, says scientists look at DNA to see if a person is more at risk for common inherited conditions — things like cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol or blood disorders."This isn't just information about something that might happen. This is information about what might happen but also how to prevent it," South said.There's still a lot to learn about this kind of science, but South says finding out health information can be both empowering and reassuring — especially now.South says that during the pandemic, they've been getting a lot more interest."Certainly, this pandemic has just heightened people's awareness of taking preventive action," South said. "So, it's absolutely top of mind for a lot of individuals who now recognize that taking care of preventative and taking care of their health, being in that driver seat. This is the right time for it, and the technology is clear."South says that regardless of what a person may or not learn from the test that it's still important to get regular health screenings. After receiving results, people should discuss what they discover with their doctors and make sure they follow up with preventative care — and remember that not every disease is linked to genetics.South also says that moms are usually the health care managers within families, as they tend to have the most interest. With that in mind, Jerson says she's taking the time to learn more about her own lineage."It's really empowering to know that we have a way to do this and that, yes, there are still states that have the adoption records locked and sealed so you can't even get access to them," Jerson said. The hurricane that swept ashore in Louisiana less than 24 hours ago has weakened to a tropical depression and is bringing heavy rain to western Mississippi.The National Hurricane Center says maximum sustained winds of what was once Hurricane Delta were clocked at 35 mph at around 10 a.m. local time Saturday. At that time, the storm was centered about 65 miles north-northwest of Jackson, Mississippi, and was moving northeast at 16 mph.Tropical storm-force winds gusts will persist for a few more hours over portions of Mississippi and southeastern Arkansas during the day Saturday.Officials say heavy rainfall will lead to flash flooding and minor river flooding across Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys Saturday and into the Southern Appalachians through Sunday.“Minor to major river flooding will continue across portions of Louisiana and Mississippi through much of the week,” NHC said.Hurricane Delta made landfall as a Category 2 storm in southwestern Louisiana. The center of the storm hit land at 6 p.m. Friday near Creole, with top winds of 100 mph.Around landfall, a National Weather Service water gauge at Freshwater Canal Locks, Louisiana, reported a storm surge inundation of more than 8 feet above ground level. The Harvard Global Health Institute released an interactive map in July that shows the risk of contracting the coronavirus based on daily new cases per 100,000 people. At the time the map was released, three states were in the red. As of Monday, that number has since increased to 13.According to Harvard, the 13 states represent ones where full stay-at-home orders are necessary, while an additional 23 should consider them.The map has four colors – green, yellow, orange and red – to demonstrate the risk by county and state.
