In yet another distressing milestone amid the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1 million people globally have now died of the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins.The planet passed the milestone Monday, about nine months after the new disease was first identified in Wuhan, China.Around the world, more than 33 million people are confirmed to have contracted the virus. The planet reached the 1 million deaths threshold just days after the United States recorded its 200,000th death linked to the virus — a rate that continues to lead the world. The U.S. also leads all other countries with more than 7 million confirmed cases of COVID-19.With 142,000 fatalities, Brazil is the only other country with more than 100,000 COVID-19 deaths. Other countries with high death tolls include India (about 96,000), Mexico (76,077) and the United Kingdom (42,077).The U.S., India (about 6 million), Brazil (about 5 million) and Russia (about 1 million) lead the world with the most confirmed cases of the virus.Worldwide, COVID-19 is spreading at the highest rates since the pandemic began. In mid-July, California’s department of transportation, known as CalTrans, was supposed to break ground on a highway construction project that was expected to take 18 days.The work was to repair and repave 800 feet of the busy 101 Freeway that connects San Francisco to the mainland, but the work never started because the project wrapped up in April, months before it was originally expected to begin."In the Bay Area, it was one of our busier years,” said CalTrans spokesman Bart Ney.The only reason contractors were able to start and complete the project months ahead of schedule was because of COVID-19.“We had to reduce traffic in normal situations by 30%, which was going to be very difficult,” said Ney. "In this case, we already had about a 40% traffic reduction because of people staying home for COVID-19.”In Colorado, something similar happened as plans to add an express lane through the main mountain corridor were able to accelerate a month.“It was over a 50% drop in traffic,” said Colorado Department of Traffic spokeswoman Presley Fowler.In April, the Federal Highway Administration says Americans drove 40% fewer miles than they did during the same time in 2019. It allowed projects in Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Texas, Virginia, and Florida to all start ahead of schedule as well.The reduction in traffic didn’t only speed up work timelines, it also increased safety for workers as they could work during daylight hours that typically would have been off limits because of rush hour traffic. It also allowed states to save taxpayers millions in worker payroll.“You would quantify that impact in numbers in the tens of millions of dollars,” said Ney of the Highway 101 project.But as some states sped up their projects, others had to apply the brakes to theirs. "Not just the grade level, but the social and emotional level and the whole child level so they can see how they can support each child better."PowerSchool technology is a software system that integrates every aspect of education, from instruction to training — even paychecks and student portals. The school districts that were already using it were better prepared for the COVID-19 shutdown."We did see the districts who already had a blended learning in place had a 96% engagement," Gulati said. "But districts who had to scramble and did not have some of the things only saw 56% engagement."According to Gulati, parents can access their students' entire schedule and see what their child can expect from their school district this fall.For Stanton, the transition to online learning this past spring wasn't that bad. But she says her district is in a rural area and there are some students who aren't connected."WiFi needs to be for every student — I think everybody — in this time of life," she said, "It needs to be like electricity or water. It's there for everybody rather than the exorbitant prices that it is at times."Stanton says she's spending her summer preparing for more digital instruction this fall."I hope to see my kids in some capacity, whether it be face-to-face or virtual or blended," she said. "But I also worry about school being a safe haven for so many of my students. What happens when they come to school sick, and we all get infected and bring it home to our kids and our families?
