Thomson International issued a voluntary recall Saturday for thousands of pounds of onions due to possible salmonella contamination.The recall includes red, yellow, white and sweet yellow varieties.The recall came a day after the CDC issued a food safety alert for onions produced by the company after nearly 400 people from 34 states had been sickened with salmonella. Fifty-nine of those who were sickened were hospitalized.According to the CDC's food alert, red onions are most likely the cause of the outbreak, but because of the way the onions are grown and harvested, other types may have been contaminated.According to the FDA, the onions were sold in mesh sacks as small as two pounds and in cartons as large as 50 pounds. They were shipped to grocery stores in all 50 states and Canada on May 1, and were sold under a variety of brand names.The CDC recommends throwing away all onions from Thomson International or its associated brands. If it's unclear who grew the onions, the CDC also recommends throwing them away.The agency also recommends cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces that may have come into contact with the onions, including countertops, refrigerator drawers, knives and cutting boards.Restaurant goers should also ask where establishments got their onions, and not order any meals with onions if it's unclear where they were produced.Salmonella usually presents with fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. People older than 65 and younger than 5 are more likely to suffer severe illness.The onions were sold under the following brand names: Thomson Premium, TLC Thomson International, Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Imperial Fresh, Kroger, Utah Onions and Food Lion. 1778

There's an unusually high volume of birds in the state right now, and the Department of Natural Resources says spring migration has come to a halt due to the snow.This stop has forced larger crowds to Wisconsin feeders. The DNR counted nearly 300 at bird feeders near La Crosse. Senior ecologist Don Quintenz at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center has seen a higher volume of birds are at the center. If the weather stays like this, he says, birds could be in trouble. "A lot of dead birds," says Quintenz, "Freezing temperatures for a couple days straight, that could be very hard on a population."Amateur Naturalist Judith Huf has studied ornithology for years and says some birds will make sacrifices while others will make due. But she does help them out by keeping her bird feeder full. "Some of them will do a little reverse migration...It's a little nicer in Illinois. It's not snowing down there and [the birds] can get food...Robins have been coming to eat bird seed out of the feeder. They don't normally eat bird seed, that's not normal behavior for a robin," said Huf. DNR says this weather creates a lose-lose situation for the birds. Since their food is either buried in the snow or frozen solid, especially tree sap or insects, scavenging is difficult.Additionally, the birds can't go elsewhere to find food because the frigid cold is blocking the warm northbound currents. There's growing concern among parents that the pandemic will impact development for their kids.“It hasn't just been COVID, right? We've learned, you know, our youngest children have learned to fear other human beings,” said Dr. Kathryn Hirsh-Pasek, Director of Temple University’s Infant Language Laboratory.Hirsh-Pasek is a professor of psychology and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. She describes the current environment as a “social hurricane.”Toddlers can't interact with each other and they pick up on the fear that their parents may have.“We may think that we hide all of this from our children, but a lot of times we don't,” said Hirsh-Pasek.She thinks most toddlers will recover in their developmental process. Eventually, they'll be back on playgrounds or in schools, learning and socializing with other kids and adults.But kids from families that have been more seriously impacted by the pandemic may struggle more, especially kids whose parents lost their jobs or who come from underserved communities that have been hit harder by the virus.“There will be some gaps they need to overcome, and I think we need to be prepared with mental professional to, to help all those children thrive,” said Hirsh-Pasek.As Hirsh-Pasek points out, history has taught us most kids are resilient.
