LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A fruit vendor who was severely beaten while preparing for his work day in Los Angeles is having surgery for his injuries Monday.Pedro Daniel Reyes, 54, was approached by a group in two cars in downtown Los Angeles Sunday at 5 a.m. at 31st and San Pedro Streets, according to Los Angeles Police.The group demanded Reyes' money and that of another street vendor, the LAPD said.Reyes gave the men his money but they attacked him, leaving him with facial fractures, a broken jaw, and a slashed throat, said Reyes' stepson John Patrick.A GoFundMe page said Reyes, who is from Oaxaca, Mexico, works as a roofer six days a week and sells fruit on Sundays. Reyes’ recovery is expected to take at least six months, Patrick said.Two other victims received minor injuries.Los Angeles Police believe the attackers are four black men between 25 and 40 years old, and a black woman about 25 years old. 937

Live music might feel like a thing of the past, but venues and event organizers are working on ideas to bring it back sooner rather than later in the age of COVID-19.Ticketmaster says it has been working with event organizers and venues to navigate how they plan to admit fans to live sporting events and concerts once a vaccine is released.On Wednesday, Pfizer updated its vaccine efficacy, saying it is 95 percent effective and is seeking clearance soon. Earlier in the week, Moderna announced its vaccine also was 95 percent effective.Ticketmaster says it has discussed the idea of using a person’s vaccine status as a possible barometer of protection for admittance into events. In an email, the company said, “In short, we are not forcing anyone to do anything. Just exploring the ability to enhance our existing digital ticket capabilities to offer solutions for event organizers that could include testing and vaccine information with 3rd party health providers. Just a tool in the box for those that may want to use.”Here is how Ticketmaster says it might work: People who wanted to attend an event would upload their vaccine status through an app that connects to a third-party health care provider. That company would store the information and keep all other details private, abiding by HIPAA laws, according to Ticketmaster. That provider would then mark that person’s status so they could present their digital ticket along with their vaccine status at the event.Ticketmaster says this would not be mandatory, noting “Ticketmaster does not have the power to set policies around safety/entry requirements, which would include vaccines and/or testing protocols. LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting of a Black man by two deputies in South L.A.Sheriff's Lt. Brandon Dean told the Los Angeles Times that the deputies tried to stop the man for riding a bike in violation of vehicle codes. The man dropped his bike and ran, and the deputies chased him.Dean said the man punched a deputy in the face and dropped a bundle of clothes he was carrying. A gun fell out of the bundle, and the deputies fatally shot him.The Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter later called for protesters to take to the streets in South Los Angeles. Looking to undermine rival Joe Biden 20 days before the election, President Donald Trump’s campaign has seized on a tabloid story offering bizarre twists to a familiar line of attack: Biden’s relationship with Ukraine. But the story in the New York Post raises more questions than answers, including about the authenticity of an email at the center of the story. The origins of the story also trace back to Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who has repeatedly pushed unfounded claims about Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Even if the emails in the Post are legitimate, they don’t validate Trump and Giuliani’s claims that Biden’s actions were influenced by his son’s business dealings in Ukraine.The email reportedly is from Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to Burisma’s board, and reads thank you "for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent (sic) some time together. It’s realty (sic) an honor and pleasure.” The Biden campaign told the Associated Press that it could not find a meeting between the then vice president and Pozharskyi on Biden's schedule. Given that the emails came directly from Trump's representatives, there are questions on the authenticity of the emails, which the Post reports came from a device left by Hunter Biden at a repair shop. Meanwhile, Twitter and Facebook have announced that they're limiting the spread of the post while they work to validate the report's authenticity.
