UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon to attend a series of meetings of the United Nations.It is Wen's second participation in UN meetings at the UN headquarters since 2008. Chinese President Hu Jintao also attended UN conferences last year.During Wen's three-day stay here, he is expected to attend and address a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the general debate of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, a summit of the UN Security Council member states and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and the MDGs.He will also meet with world leaders, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Sino-U.S. friendship groups, overseas Chinese and foreign media in New York.About 140 heads of state and government will attend the three-day MDGs high-level meeting at the UN headquarters, where they will make new commitments to achieving the MDGs before the 2015 deadline.The MDGs, forged at a UN summit in 2000, includes eight ambitious goals, such as reducing extreme poverty in the world by half, cutting infant and maternal mortality, achieving universal primary education and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases which kill millions each year.In a joint interview with the UN-based Chinese media last week, UN chief Ban voiced his confidence in China to meet those goals on time and urged other world leaders to keep their promises on the MDGs.

ANKARA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Ankara on Thursday night for a three-day official visit to Turkey.Turkey is the last leg of Wen's four-nation tour, which has taken him to Greece, Belgium and Italy. BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's national political advisors Thursday offered suggestions on the national development plan for 2011 to 2015, at a meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, the top political advisory body, attended the meeting.At the gathering, 15 CPPCC members made speeches in which they advised the government on issues such as improving education, adjusting income distribution, developing the western regions, enhancing China's innovative abilities and public welfare.The Communist Party of China Central Committee outlined the key objectives of the 12th five-year development plan in a four-day meeting that ended on Monday.The plan will be drawn up by the State Council, or the Cabinet. China's top legislature, the National People's Congress, will vote on the plan at its annual plenary session early next year.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China has kept a "generally stable" coal mine safety record in the first nine months of 2010, as the death toll caused by accidents remained almost flat over the same period last year, Zhao Tiechui, head of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety (SACMS), said here Monday.From January to September, the nation's coal output reached 2.44 billion tonnes, up 17.2 percent, but accidents dropped 13.2 percent year on year, Zhao said.He did not give any actual numbers of coal mine accidents or deaths caused during period, but said the death ratio per million tons of coal output stood at 0.783 percent, down 13.9 percent over the same period last year.According to the SACMS's last publicized figures, deaths from coal mine accidents totaled 3,215 in China in 2008. In the January-September period of 2009, China recorded 591 fewer deaths from coal mine accidents, down by 23.8 percent from the 2008 level.Gas explosions, floods and fires inside coal mines were frequent occurrences during the first nine months, posing severe safety challenges to China's coal mine production, Zhao said.In a separate report by the State Administration of Work Safety in July this year, workplace accidents left 33,876 people dead in China during the first half of the year.
