CA?ON CITY, Co. -- The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park has been a place providing natural beauty and adrenaline rushing rides for 91 years.“It’s history,” said Chad Harris, who works at the admissions desk. “It’s one of the most iconic places in the United States, and I feel honored to work here.” Harris said the park has been a special part of his life. He was an intern at the park several years ago and then came back to work full-time.“My family worked here, my brother, my sister my mom,” Harris said. “I wanted to come back to this place and have a career here.” But seven years ago, Harris watched decades of memories go up in flames. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park was destroyed by a wildfire. The bridge was nearly all that was left.The heartbreak of the fire—only preparing Harris and his team for the challenges that COVID-19 would bring.“I honestly thought the fire was the worst thing that could happen to us,” said Peggy Gair, who manages public relations for the park.Gair has been with the park for more than 20 years and said the virus was a new strain of devastation.“Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d be closed for that many weeks, the two and a half months that we were,” Gair said. She said the fire was different—the park had insurance and was prepared to rebuild. No one could have prepared them for the pandemic.Just before the pandemic hit, employees spent dozens of hours and thousands of dollars hiring 30 new employees. Days later, they had to let everyone go, and now, the process to rehire is more complicated than ever before.Gair is signed up for a new way to find workers: a live, virtual job fair. She’s hoping to fill dozens of open positions around the park. Some of those jobs have been available since last year, and now, Gair believes the extra 0 a week in unemployment benefits is playing a role in keeping people from applying.“There’s jobs available,” Gair said. “People aren’t excited to go back to work. They want to wait.” Gair is hoping that after July 31, more people will come to her park looking for work.Despite the struggle, Gair said she looks at the park today like she did in 2013—as a beacon of hope. CHICAGO, Ill. – According to the Mueller report, during the last election, Russian hackers breached the computer network of the Illinois State Board of Elections, gaining access to information on millions of registered voters. It was just one example of the vulnerabilities in the U.S. election system.Intelligence officials and security experts agree that cyber-attacks like the one’s perpetrated during the 2016 presidential election are not a thing of the past.“There's no reason to believe that attacks like that would not happen in this election,” said Jake Braun, executive director at the Cyber Policy Initiative at the University of Chicago. He’s also the author of “Democracy in Danger: How Hackers and Activists Exposed Fatal Flaws in the Election System.”Braun says the two most serious vulnerabilities lie in voter registration databases and election night returns data. He says the hacking of either could cause chaos at the polls or spawn conspiracy theories about the election’s outcome.“We're already seeing ransomware attacks on databases and we're already seeing things like fake websites to mimic election websites being put up,” said Braun.Mary Hanley, Associate Director of the Cyber Policy Initiative, says they are trying to help protect against those kinds of attacks. For the first time through their cyber surge program, they’re connecting a network of 250 volunteer cybersecurity technologists with U.S. state and local election officials ahead of the 2020 election.“We can help answer basic questions about general cyber hygiene, but we can also help election administrators understand how to remediate vulnerabilities that they've already identified,” she said.Volunteer cyber technologists like New Mexico-based Chris Perkins say election officials need to be able to see where potential assaults can present themselves.“Once you have that visibility on your attack surfaces, then you can start to detect those anomalies and things that start to look like suspicious activity,” said Perkins.In a highly polarized atmosphere, cyber experts say it’s even more important to ensure that security breaches are quickly identified and contained. 2176

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after reportedly assaulting two Border Patrol agents as they attempted to arrest him for trying to smuggle people into the U.S. According to the agency, the incident happened around 1:17 a.m. Tuesday as agents patrolled Interstate 8 in Campo. Agents tried to stop a 2007 Ford F-350 near Kitchen Creek Road when the driver took off, leading agents on a high-speed chase. RELATED: 14-year-old tried to smuggle meth strapped to body, CBP saysAccording to Border Patrol, agents successfully deployed a tire deflation device, forcing the vehicle to stop a short distance later, but the driver got out and fled on foot. As agents searched for man, he reportedly jumped out of a nearby bush, tackling one of the officers to the ground. A second agent also responded to the scene, struggling with the suspect as well. Inside the F-350, agents found three men and one woman, all Mexican nationals in the U.S. illegally. They were all taken to a Border Patrol station for processing and the suspect, identified as a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested. Becky Sloan is the first to arrive.The food is set up outside the home of Tomira Baca-Craig, who runs a food co-op that divvies out extra bread donated by bakeries and stores. On this morning, she posted the giveaway on her "Buy Nothing" Facebook group.It's not just bread. Sloan showed reporters with KGTV in San Diego photos of baseballs, crafting items, shoes for her children and home decor, just some of the stuff she's received in the last two years.
