SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County officials say they are no longer accepting waiver applications from elementary schools looking to reopen for in-person learning.The county’s COVID-19 Education Sector Team made the announcement Tuesday, stating:“This decision is based on the fact that as of September 1, 2020, all TK-12 schools within San Diego County would be permitted to reopen for in-person instruction, if the county’s case rate remains below 100 per 100,000 population for 14 days after coming off the State’s Monitoring List. Today is day 7 of this 14-day period, therefore in one week, all TK-12 schools could be allowed to open for in-person instruction, if the school leadership chooses to do so. Therefore, our application waiver process will be suspended.”The suspension is effective immediately.As of Aug. 20, there were 27 local schools that were approved for waivers. 893

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers arrested a man for attacking a four-year-old girl outside an apartment complex on the 4300 block of 50th Street.According to witnesses, the little girl’s father was dropping the girl off at her grandmother’s home around 11:30. Before the grandmother could walk the four-year-old through the security gates of her complex, a stranger attacked the child from behind.A neighbor, who only asked to use his first name, Robert, says he heard someone calling for the help, so he came outside. He says he saw the grandmother had gotten through the gate, but the father and another neighbor were outside of the entrance trying to hold off the attacker. Robert felt compelled to step in.“He came at me, and it seemed like he was going for someone, and that someone was a child,” he said, “so I had no other recourse, I hit him once he went down. He bit my leg. He got up, and he started coming after me.”But the man didn’t stay down, instead continued to attack.“Very very vicious, he had a very crazy look,” Robert said. “He wasn’t saying anything, he was grunting like a feral animal. He was exceptionally strong. He just wouldn’t quit, even when the police got here, he was very very strong.”Robert says he had no idea why he was trying to hurt the little girl but said the man might have been under the influence of something.Police arrested the suspect.Robert recalled seeing red marks around the little girl’s neck but said she was okay though visibly shaken.She is home with her parents. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer met with leaders from the Marine Corps on Thursday to officially strengthen their partnership. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding between their organizations to work together on "Smart City" technologies such as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), smart streetlights, renewable energy, and the City's "Get it Done" app. Last year the City of San Diego was selected for a pilot program by the U.S. Department of Transportation to advance the testing of UAS, more commonly referred to as drones. They're already being used by police and fire in Chula Vista. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police announced Thursday the arrest of a mother accused of driving her SUV the wrong way in Rancho Bernardo, causing a head-on crash that injured her children and an innocent driver.Mayra Gonzalez, 29, was drunk when she drove her Chevy Suburban east in the westbound lanes of Camino del Norte west of Interstate 15 Monday morning, police said.The Suburban hit a Jeep Liberty, seriously injuring the 57-year-old man in the Jeep.Gonzalez’ three children were in the car at the time of the crash. Her 8-year-old and 2-year-old daughters had minor injuries but her 9-month-old daughter, who was unrestrained, suffered life-threatening injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego police are searching for the person who fired a gun into a group of people injuring two teens late Saturday night.Two groups of people began arguing just before midnight at the corner of 30th Street and J Street in the Grant Hill neighborhood, about a block away from Kimbrough Elementary School.The gunman pulled out a handgun and shot a 16-year-old boy in the left calf and a 18-year-old male in the right ankle, authorities said.A possible third shooting victim was located at an area hospital with undisclosed injuries, according to police. No further information was given at this time.The incident is being investigated as gang-related shooting, police said.The suspect, who was last seen wearing a white tank top and dark shorts, fled in an unknown direction, police said. 831
