Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., became the first Black and South Asian-American woman to accept the Democratic nomination for vice president Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention.Harris accepted the nomination from Wilmington, Delaware. Harris was officially picked by Joe Biden last week to be his running mate. Biden will accept the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday.Harris used her primetime address to introduce herself to millions of voters. The 55-year-old California senator has quickly ascended the hierarchy of the Democratic Party, and has the chance to become the second-most powerful person in the country come January.“[I am] committed to the values she [my mother] taught me, to the word that teaches me to walk by faith, and not by sight, and to a vision passed on through generations of Americans—one that Joe Biden shares,” Harris said. “A vision of our nation as a beloved community–where all are welcome, no matter what we look like, where we come from, or who we love.”Harris reminisced about her personal connection to the Biden family, through Joe Biden’s son Beau, who died in 2015.Following her official nomination, Biden joined Harris on the stage in Delaware, keeping his distance as a reminder of the ongoing pandemic.Warren’s subtle Black Lives Matter messageSen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who opposed both Harris and Biden for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, offered her full support of the ticket. But what garnered the most attention was not what she said, but what was seen. Speaking from a classroom, Warren had three colorful letters behind her spelling out “BLM,” short for Black Lives Matter. 1672

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — A border clash high in the Himalayas between the world’s two most populated countries has claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers. It was the first deadly violence between China and India since the two nuclear armed neighbors faced off in a border dispute 45 year ago.Indian officials say the troops fought each other with fists and rocks along the high-altitude terrain before the two sides “disengaged” from the area where the fighting happened.Along with those killed, India said that about 17 of its soldiers were also critically injured. The nature of those injuries was not disclosed.China accused Indian forces of carrying out “provocative attacks” on its troops and has not said if any of its soldiers have died. 750

Starbucks announced changes to their loyalty program giving customers more ways to pay for their drinks while earning stars.Customers have complained for years about the need to reload their Starbucks card in order to spend money at the coffee giant and earn loyalty stars. In order for customers to earn stars in the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program, customers had to use a Starbucks card or gift card to pay. This forced regular customers to constantly reload their card to ensure there was enough money for their purchases.Starbucks announced Tuesday they will allow alternative payments in a few months, and still allow members to earn stars or purchases. Alternative methods include debit/credit cards, cash, and select mobile wallets. However, there’s a catch. When the changes take place, customers paying with their Starbucks card or gift card will earn two loyalty stars per spent, and those paying with alternative methods will earn one star per spent. In an update posted to their website, Starbucks said the changes would happen in fall. 1061

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A central Florida sheriff says his deputies won't be allowed to wear face masks except under some conditions, and neither will visitors to the sheriff's office.Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods made the announcement on the week that Florida had some of its highest days of coronavirus deaths.“In light of the current events when it comes to the sentiment and/or hatred toward law enforcement in our country today, this is being done to ensure there is clear communication and for identification purposes of any individual walking into a lobby,” he wrote in a statement.Sheriff Woods said working mask-free hasn’t led to a spike of infections in his 900-person department. “Since the beginning of this pandemic the operation of this office has not changed and no wearing of masks has been put in place,” he said in a statement to the Washington Post.On Wednesday, state health officials reported 212 new deaths from COVID-19.Also on Wednesday, there more than 8,100 new infections reported, for a total of 550,000 cases in the state since the pandemic started. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July asked Americans to wear masks to help stop the spread of the new coronavirus. This story originally reported by Tamara Lush, Mike Schneider and The Associated Press. 1315
