Trump also compared an unnamed London hospital to a "war zone" in the NRA speech, saying that despite tough gun laws in the United Kingdom, it has blood all over the floors from victims of knife attacks."They don't have guns. They have knives and instead there's blood all over the floors of this hospital," Trump said. "They say it's as bad as a military war zone hospital ... knives, knives, knives. London hasn't been used to that. They're getting used to that. It's pretty tough."British officialdom did not push back. London Mayor Sadiq Khan's office declined to comment to CNN following Trump's remarks. But former UK Cabinet minister Charlie Falconer tweeted Saturday: "US murder rate over 5 times higher than the UK's. There isn't a person in the whole world (with the possible exception of the President of the US, and he's probably lying) who believes the way to reduce our murder rate is to make it easier to get guns."It's unclear what hospital Trump was referring to. But the BBC reported that a trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital,?Dr. Martin Griffiths, recently told the network that his fellow doctors have compared it to an Afghan war zone.Amid the furor over Trump's comments, Griffiths tweeted Saturday: "Happy to invite Mr Trump to my (prestigious) hospital to meet with our mayor and police commissioner to discuss our successes in violence reduction in London."Professor Karim Brohi, a trauma surgeon at The Royal London Hospital and director of London's Major Trauma System, also hit back at Trump's speech, saying in a statement that, "The Royal London Hospital has cut the number of our young patients returning after further knife attacks from 45% to 1%."Brohi said that while there is more that can be done to combat knife attacks, gunshot wounds are "at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more difficult to repair."Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke by phone Saturday. According to the White House, they discussed China trade, North Korea, Iran and Trump's upcoming visit to Britain. It's unknown whether they talked about Trump's remarks to the NRA. 2114
Those videos reportedly led to the arrest of girl’s father, Damon Becnel. An arrest report obtained by WEAR states the teenager turned over two videos to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. In one clip, you can see a man identified as Becnel screaming, pointing and even headbutting the teenage girl. Becnel can also be heard yelling at their dogs. At one point, you can see him hitting one of the animals and holding an object to the dog's neck. The arrest report identifies that object as a knife. The teen then jumps on top of her father, yelling for him to stop. “I’m killing the dog,” Becnel can be heard saying. Becnel is then seen shoving the teen against a wall and headbutting her. The video then goes on for six minutes, WEAR reports. According to the arrest report, Becnel is a prominent business owner in the Okaloosa County area. A community Facebook group was created after the video was posted on social media and it now has more than 2,500 members. WEAR spoke with one of the group’s creators who says she previously worked with the Becnel family. She says the purpose of the group is to ensure the safety of the girl and her animals. "His behavior is, you know, we've all seen bits and pieces of that, but not, not that side of him in the familial sense,” said the woman. “He's out ,000 bail on each charge against two of the most innocent creatures this earth has graced us with, a child and a puppy and it's just, I think that's what everybody is just up in arms about. And I think it needs to be handled the right way or else it's going to get really bad."The sheriff's office arrested Damon Becnel on Jan. 2 after watching the videos brought to them by the victim. He’s now out on bond and slated to go before a judge on Feb. 4. 1754
This time, it's different, she said. The Sandy Hook survivors were too young to speak for themselves. Columbine High School students did not have social media, and the shooting preceded the politically charged debate around mass shootings. 239
Trump explicitly endorsed a measure from Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, which encapsulates the White House's desired immigration results. 135
There's just no other way to put it, he said. "And I'm not that type of person. I hope that this mistake will not define me as a person, but it shows that I have messed up and can learn from it. I don't want to be known for this dumb mistake. I want to be known for my respectfulness and my love and passion for the game of basketball. This event has changed me in a way I can't explain." 388
