BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign.At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23. The local government has asked kindergartens and schools across the province to step up health checks of children.Li urged the acceleration of research into vaccines and drugs for the disease and a focus on prevention and control work in rural areas for the most vulnerable groups.HFMD is a common illness mainly affecting children under the age of 10. It usually starts with a slight fever which is followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through contact with saliva or feces of the infected.Li stressed related departments across the country should step up work to prevent and control A/H1N1 influenza with emergency plans and ample storage of vaccines, drugs and equipment.Li added that major events, including the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be the key events for disease control and prevention.

NANNING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and one was missing amid heavy rains that pounded a scenic city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for the past two days, Guangxi's flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Saturday.Continuous rainstorms triggered mud-rock flows Thursday night in Ziyuan County of Guilin City, killing three people there, the headquarters said.On Friday morning, a fisherman was swept away by rain-triggered floods in Gongcheng County of Guilin.Rainstorms had incurred property losses to about 19,000 people in Guilin as more than 30 houses collapsed, 1,100 hectares of farmland were inundated and many public facilities were damaged.The economic damage was estimated at 13.2 million yuan (1.9 million U.S. dollars).In southern province of Guangdong, three rainstorms pelted Guangzhou, the provincial capital, over the past week, with rainfall up to 440 mm, a record high in 25 years.The precipitation equalled to a quarter of the city's annual rainfall, according to meteorological statistics, said Lin Liangxun, Guangdong's chief weather forecaster.Guangdong has reported one missing. More than 35,000 people have been affected by the three rounds of heavy rains.Latest weather forecast said the rain is expected to weaken over the weekend.In the central province of Hunan, more than 8,000 people were stranded Saturday after heavy rains inundated the key roads of a town. BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao extended their regards to 115 miners late Monday who had been rescued alive after being trapped in a flooded coal mine for over a week.The two leaders also paid tributes to all the 3,000 rescuers who had been racing the clock to save the 153 trapped people since the flooding happened on March 28 in the Wangjialing Coal Mine in northern Shanxi Province.Hu and Wen ordered the rescue headquarters to step up efforts and go all out to save the other 38 trapped people.They also required local health authorities to give the most considerate treatment of the rescued miners.Altogether 261 miners were working underground when floodwater gushed into the pit of the mine, which was under construction, and 108 were lifted safely to the surface.

BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China's health authorities stressed Friday a ban of hepatitis B tests for college admission and employment, saying checks, if necessary due to occupational requirements, are subjected to the Health Ministry's approval.A notice of the ministry reiterated that health institutions are not allowed to give hepatitis B virus (HBV) tests in health checks carried out for college admission and job recruitment, a policy introduced in February to prevent discrimination on HBV carriers.If candidates' liver functions must be tested to qualify special job posts, the checks must get approval from the Health Ministry, the notice said.The notice also said health institutions cannot provide HBV tests in regular health checks unless at the request of testers, in which case reports must be sealed and handed directly to testers or someone they entrust.Clinical tests must seek consent from patients and their privacy should be respected, according to the notice.Previously, an HBV test was a must on the health check list for college admission and job recruitment, and carriers were usually denied the opportunities, which caused complaints of discrimination and calls for a ban of such tests.The World Health Organization says HBV is transmitted from mother to child, through unsafe injections practices, blood transfusions or sexual contacts, and it cannot be transmitted through casual contact.
