SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Cool zones provide a refuge during the hot summer months, so it's helpful the county has developed a plan to get them open."The cool zones program is offered in partnership with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Aging & Independence Services and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. 1424

San Diego (KGTV)- As teachers come up with their virtual lesson plans for the upcoming school year, one local music teacher is turning to the community. Students at Grossmont High School need guitars for class."We'll have 80 students plus taking guitar this year," says teacher Jeremy Cooke. "It is vital for them to be able to play a guitar at home."The high school is not able to provide an instrument for each student."We're a Title I school. So over half of our students get free or reduced lunch, and many can't afford their own guitar."Cooke made a post on Facebook asking for the community to donate any used or new guitars. He says the response has been amazing. As of Monday afternoon, Cooke has received over 30 guitars. Many others are pledging to donate."I've been driving around the county picking up guitars, meeting the people who are donating, and its really neat to see, especially during these tough times."As part of his distance learning plan, Cook has compiled multiple videos recorded over the years to help students learn to play the guitar.Once the class is finished, the students will return the donated guitars to the school for others to use the following year.Grossmont High School is still in need of more guitars. Cooke says he is accepting used and new acoustic or electric guitars for the upcoming school year. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diegans have a new opportunity to go back to school without fear of being saddled with student loan debt.The San Diego Workforce Partnership and U.C. San Diego Extension are teaming up to create what's called an income share agreement. Here's how it works:People complete a roughly yearlong certificate program in digital marketing, business intelligence, front-end web design or java programming at UCSD Extension. The fund will front the student's entire tuition, plus support services to total about ,500. Grads only make payments on it if they have a job that pays at least ,000 a year. "Once you get a foothold in some of these jobs, your salary potential grows even faster," said Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership. Grads would be billed 6 to 8 percent of their pre-tax salary per month, but they'd never pay more than ,500. Plus, all payments top after three to five years. The idea is that the most successful grads can fund the next generation of those looking to retrain.Google.org, Strada Education Network and the James Irvine Foundation are backing the program, along with an anonymous donor. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - California Gov. Gavin Newsom said indoor operations must close in the state, so some businesses like gyms and restaurants are moving outside. For the beauty industry, there’s a divide. While Newsom and San Diego County officials said businesses can move outside, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.Bahar Radman is a stylist at Del Beauty Box and said she already started cutting hair in her salon’s parking lot. She said it works because there is more space to spread out, there is better airflow, she already has the cosmetology training on best hygiene practices, and she’s also taking coronavirus safety precautions, like keeping a mask on the whole time. She said of her first three outdoor clients, all were happy with the setup and already booked return appointments.This goes against the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology rules, though. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Consumer Affairs said, “The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology understands the effect shutdowns have on businesses and is sensitive to that. As it stands at this moment, under current laws and regulations, the services cannot be performed outside. A few years ago, came to this country, I had a goal and I came to live right. So I just want to keep continue living right. So if you want to put me in jail, get my license, whatever, do it if you think that’s right and that’s fair. But I’m risking it, yes,” she said. 2207

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego State University held an inauguration for their new president. Dr. Adela de la Torre is the ninth president for SDSU but the first female president. She was appointed in 2018. During her speech she said, “I know I stand here as first woman to serve as permanent president to lead this university, but I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of women who have shaped the identity of SDSU from the very beginning”. Looking at the coming years, she says there is critical work that needs to be done. Further, she explains her support for SDSU West and her plans to expand SDSU Imperial Valley, “we will continue to capitalize on its untapped potential,” she says. 699
