WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. — Northern Kentucky law enforcement officials are working extra hard this time of year to keep any "Grinchiness" out of their respective "Whovilles."Before Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Conrad hits the road these days, he arms himself with kindness, in the form of gift cards.“It’s part of the Sheriff's Santa Project,” Conrad said.It’s an idea that was brought to the office three years ago by their chaplain.“I really think projects like this give us a glass-half-full attitude, rather than a glass-half-empty,” Grant County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Rev. Tim Polley said. “Don’t we all need some joy in our lives?”The answer for Grant County’s deputies is "yes."“We make a legit traffic stop,” Conrad said. “In lieu of writing a citation, we hand out a gift card to our local businesses.”Several drivers who got a Sheriff's Santa surprise were both grateful and thankful, a nice reminder to use a turn signal.The project does more than just promote good driving, it also drives business to local shops and restaurants who could use a customer boost during the coronavirus pandemic.“Typically, we deal with the more negative aspects of humanity, so when we can do anything that's positive, it's a blessing to us,” Conrad said. “We swore an oath to the Constitution. I got into this job 15 years ago 'cause I wanted to help people.”Now he’s helping people by helping to give back to the community.“Everybody thinks they're out to get us, but they're here to help us,” said driver Justin Ost, who got a gift card to a local barbecue restaurant.Polley sought out local businesses to donate the gift cards, or people to donate money to be exchanged into cards. “It is just that little nudge that some people need to say there is still good in this world,” he said.The Sheriff's Santa Project runs through Christmas Eve.This story originally reported by Kristyn Hartman on wcpo.com. 1912

He believes the increase is linked to more people staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic.“Unfortunately, COVID happened at a time when we were already knowing that we were going to get a higher call volume,” Mulder said.Across the country, more people are seeing an increase in pest problems.In New York City, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about aggressive rats starving for food scraps as restaurants shutdown during the pandemic.Down south in Hoover, Alabama, veterinarians have seen an uptick in snakes biting dogs.“Pets have kind of been couch potatoes for a long time," said Dr. Jessica Caver, medical director for Steel City Emergency Vets.She says over the past two months, her staff has seen a 40% increase of dogs bitten by snakes compared to last year.“The biggest thing that I can attribute that to right now is that a lot of people are out you know get some break from the quarantine from COVID-19,” Caver said.Back at Margenau’s house, Mulder is working to evict the unwanted visitors.He understands that there’s an unemployment problem during the pandemic, but says if you’re dealing with a pest problem, it’s best to get it taken care of immediately. When Bob Prebola saw a young white man riding a bike and putting up posters in his neighborhood, he and his wife took a close look and thought somebody was being racist. The picture is of a man, who appears to be Black, with his nose distorted to look larger or turned up.Prebola took down the posters near his house in Livonia, Michigan, and told 7 Action News, "the picture to me is highly offensive. While all hands are on deck to combat the novel coronavirus, there is another virus that experts are keeping their eyes on – the EEE virus, commonly known as the "Triple E."It stands for eastern equine encephalitis.You may have heard of the virus last year when we started seeing more cases outside of Gulf Coast states, where the virus is normally seen."Triple E" can cause inflammation in the brain, which can be deadly.In 2018, the United States only had six cases of "Triple E." In 2019, that number rose to 38, an alarming number considering about a third of people who become infected are expected to die.With coronavirus at top of mind this summer, experts are concerned people may not take the right precautions for "Triple E."“You hear all about coronavirus, having to wear a mask,” said Dr. Brittany Campbell, an entomologist with the National Pest Management Association. “We've been doing social distancing for months now, with a little bit of movement. So, I can understand that everyone is a little bit exhausted from being concerned about their health all of the time. But at this time, I really encourage people to remain diligent.”This can be done by making a habit of dumping out any standing water in your yard and also protecting yourself by wearing repellent.And when it comes to how rampant "Triple E" will be this mosquito season, experts aren't exactly sure. It really depends on the temperature, climate and rain specific to each region.Massachusetts saw a large outbreak last year.
