SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Oceanside family is mourning the loss of a beloved father to COVID-19.David Bustamante first started feeling sick during the first week of November."Started with a cold. Congestion, and then a cough in his chest," said his daughter Samantha Bustamante.A few days later, he drove himself to the hospital, received a COVID-19 test, and was sent home. By the time he learned he was positive, his symptoms had gotten worse."He was having trouble breathing, really raspy," Samantha said.Bustamante decided to stay at the home of a friend, who had also tested positive. On the morning of Nov. 13, Bustamante, a father of two grown children, passed away in his sleep, at the age of 64."It’s very hard knowing he’s gone, and it’s heartbreaking ... so quick, suddenly and out of the blue. Very unexpected," said Samantha.Samantha says her father loved his family and loved his work in the inspection process for a new home builder."He was resilient, hard-working, and caring with a big heart," said Samantha.During the pandemic, he kept working. She doesn't know how he contracted COVID-19, but does know he was diligent about wearing a mask."All I can say to people is to be as safe as you can in everything you do ... You just don't know what's going to happen," said Samantha.On Thanksgiving, Samantha will join some extended family is a small get-together, with one fewer place setting"He’s definitely going to be missed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After San Diego Street Scene was canceled in 2010, a void was left behind downtown.Acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Beck, Vampire Weekend, M.I.A. converged onto East Village for two days of concerts by more than 40 bands — until they didn't any longer.Now, a new music and arts festival with the backing of local icons Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman, and Rob Machado is preparing to bring the same excitement and then some back to San Diego's waterfront scene later this year.RELATED: Wonderfront offering free entertainment to San DiegansWonderfront Festival intends to bring more than 70 bands across seven stages on the city's waterfront from Nov. 22-24. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost 2,000 people gathered in San Diego to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday at the 38th annual Human Dignity Award breakfast in Mission Valley. “He fought and gave his life not just for African Americans but for everyone,” said Dee Sanford, this year’s honoree. Sanford stared a telecommunications business in 1994, was an adjunct professor at colleges, and created public access television and radio stations. “You don't do it for honor but when someone remembers and acknowledges your work, it’s really a humbling experience,” she said. My father was part of the civil rights movement. He was our king,” said Sanford. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A similar Observation Wheel to those in England and Paris could come to Balboa Park for a short term stay.The Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America presented the idea of the Balboa Park Star to the Balboa Park Committee Meeting on October 1.They hope the wheel would attract more visitors and re-energize the park."We have operated these observation wheels during the pandemic," Vice President of Sky Views of America Ben Pickett said.The gondolas are enclosed and climate controlled. According to the presentation, they are sanitized after each ride and safety protocols comply with state, local and CDC guidelines. Masks would be required for passengers and staff. The presentation was met with excitement by the committee."I love the fact it is innovative and outside the box," Committee Member Victoria Curran said. "This is a terrific idea, I love it!" Committee Member Johanna Schiavoni added."Sometimes it's the craziest ideas that are the best ones," Committee Member Micah Parzen said.
