SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As many San Diego business owners fold due to coronavirus pandemic pressures, a few brave entrepreneurs are launching their businesses now, including a Pacific Beach couple that turned their passion for plants into a "blooming" business.It was the sign of the times for boxing instructor Cody Warden -- COVID-19 made him jobless."I was laid off during that time," Warden said. "It was not legal for me to teach boxing."His girlfriend, Tammy Nguyen, a social media content manager, was also now working out of their Pacific Beach home. But when the couple looked around, all they saw was joy."We were getting all these houseplants in our house, and it was filling this void if you will," Warden said. "It brought us companionship in a time when it was really difficult to see your friends or family."So they took a leap of faith last month, and decided to turn their passion into a business. They launched IvyMay & Co., an online houseplant curating company that offers tips and free, contact-less delivery anywhere in San Diego County."Plants are a form of therapy for people who might be depressed during this time, and being able to take care of these plants and seeing them grow gave a lot of people happiness," Nguyen said.Science backs this up. A 2015 study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology looked at the psychological responses of young adults to a computer task, versus an indoor plant-related task. Researchers found that people who interacted with plants had significantly lower blood pressure, as well as physiological and psychological stress.Although Warden and Nguyen cannot see their customer's smiles underneath the masks, they can hear it in their voices when they deliver. They say it reassures them that starting a business that brings joy during the pandemic was the right thing to do."If I could keep a house plant alive, you can too!" Warden laughed. "There's no such thing as a green thumb. Basic things, learn how to read your plant, and listen to what it's telling you."As the business grows, Warden and Nguyen hope to partner with local artists who can create unique pots for their plants. 2164

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Businesses are bracing for Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement Monday after San Diego has been on the state's watch-list since July 3, due to a surge in coronavirus cases.Newsom could announce indoor activities, like arcades, restaurant dining, movie theaters and museums will be shut down to contain the spread.This news comes as San Diego restaurants faced a volley of changes over the past four months."I think that the only thing that is constant is the change," Chief Brewing Officer Mike Hess said from his Imperial Beach brewery.He said the lucky thing about most of his locations is they have outdoor space, so they can shift more easily. He said in one pay period his labor costs at the Imperial Beach location are three times the norm because they switched from bar service to table service and have to sanitize more often.Across town at Small Bar, Owner Karen Barnett said they shut down at the beginning of July and don't have any plans to reopen.'At the end of the day a business is a business, people are more important.' Barnett said they have been doing take out since the beginning of the pandemic, but never reopened for dine in.She said the small space at her business and horror stories of other restaurants and bars dealing with enforcing social distancing, wearing a mask and employees testing positive with the virus, helped her stick to her guns.On Friday, she posted this on Instagram, "After much consideration, Small Bar will be closing for the entire month of July (possibly longer). When the global pandemic was declared almost 4 months ago, we decided to quickly switch gears and continue to serve our community as thoughtfully and safely as possible. Unfortunately, Americans both near and far don't seem to be listening as closely to science as we are. We no longer deem our services "essential". We care about our community and feel the best move right now is to take a step back for a few weeks. In the meantime, we will be working on our footprint and how we can safely reopen later. We encourage more businesses to follow our lead to help flatten the curve, yet again. We will be working on ways to serve with as little contact as possible, but until that time we wish you all health and peace in the world. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the ballot count continues, there’s been an explosion of rumors and misinformation on social media about the integrity of the process.Fact checkers have their hands full with false claims like #Sharpiegate.In this one, people in Arizona’s Maricopa County claimed election workers were up to no good by forcing them to mark ballots with Sharpies, those ballots would be invalid.#Sharpiegate was re-tweeted more than 300,000 times in just a few hours, according to the Election Integrity Project.However, Maricopa County Election officials say Sharpies are absolutely OK.In San Diego County, the Registrar of Voters Office says using a Sharpie will not invalidate a ballot. Even if ink bleeds through, it will not affect ovals on the other side, officials said.John Silva with the News Literacy Project says some of the rumors can be traced to regional differences. Different states have different election laws.“Almost every county, almost every city does things a little bit differently,” he said. “You see something in one part of the country and they're using Sharpies, but where you vote Sharpies are a ‘no no,’ you might interpret that as being something that's wrong even though it's totally right.”In other cases, false information might be spread intentionally for partisan purposes, he said.Silva encourages people to be skeptical of posts with certain key phrases that can be keywords of manipulation like “just let that sink in.”“We don't like this idea of being uncomfortable that there's some big thing that we're not aware of,” he said. “In the discomfort and the anxiety of not knowing, we might accept [the false information].”Other phrases to watch for: “the media won’t cover this” or “they don’t want you to know this.” There are thousands of journalists across the country who have strong incentives to be the first to break big stories -- provided of course that they are true.Another phrase: “let’s make this go viral.” Silva said this one plays into the psychological pressures of FOMO: fear of missing out.“We don't want to get left behind if everybody's following this one thing or believing in this one thing,” he said.Silva said we all need to take ownership of our online activities.“Every time you share or post something on social media, you're putting your reputation on the line,” he said. 2351

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Coaster service through San Diego County will be unavailable for two weekends this month.To give crews time to complete infrastructure improvements along the rail corridor, North County Transit District announced Coaster service from Oct. 19-20 and 26-27 would be shut down.On Fridays before the closures, southbound Amtrak R2R trains A792 and A796 will make their trips to Santa Fe Depot, but Amtrak train A590 will stop at Oceanside Transit Center.During the service shut down, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink will not provide service to Oceanside Transit Center. Trips on connecting buses will need an Amtrak reservation. Amtrak bus services will also need an Amtrak reservation. Rail 2 Rail passes are not eligible.Bus service connecting Coaster stations will not be available, but some passengers may have BREEZE Route 101 or MTS connections available.While no passenger rail service will operate on the corridor during these times, other vehicles and equipment will be in use. Pedestrians and drivers should still look out for equipment in the area.Service will resume on the Mondays after the closures but may experience delays up to 15 minutes. 1186

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Campaign committees supporting both Todd Gloria and Barbary Bry have raised more than million so far this election season, pouring money into TV ads and mail fliers.City law limits how much individuals and businesses can contribute directly to a campaign. But rules for campaign committees are more lenient, letting people, corporations, Political Action Committees, and other groups donate tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars."For better or for worse, the way the electoral system is designed, you need money to run a campaign," says San Diego State University Political Science Lecturer Stephen Goggin."It's important to note where this money is coming from," Goggin says. "Not only is it just about money in terms of voting, but it gives you a clue about who's doing the endorsing and who's backed by a particular interest group."In the 2020 race for San Diego mayor, five campaign committees have formed to support Assemblyman Todd Gloria. Combined, they have raised .7 million.Councilwoman Barbara Bry, meanwhile, has just one campaign committee raising money to support her. It has brought in around 3,000.Bry says that shows she will not be indebted to special interest groups if she's elected."The special interests in this town are afraid of an independent woman who has made it clear that she's going to demand accountability and transparency at City Hall," Bry told ABC 10News."I think this kind of spending is very harmful to our democratic system. And in this election, you know voters should understand exactly the enormous amount of money that special interests are putting into Todd Gloria's campaign," she says.An ABC 10News In-Depth look into the funding shows that Campaign Committees supporting Gloria have gotten the most money from labor groups. The Municipal Employees Association is the largest donor, giving 0,000 to a Committee called "Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria for San Diego Mayor 2020." Other labor groups have given more than 0,000 altogether.Gloria has also received around 0,000 from various short-term vacation rental companies like Airbnb, Seabreeze Vacation Rentals, and Share San Diego. The San Diego Chamber of Commerce also donated more than 0,000 to committees supporting Gloria.He told ABC 10News the large, diverse group of people and entities donating to committees on his behalf shows that he can build coalitions to lead. Gloria added his track record of more than a decade in public office shows large donors won't control him."I've always had an open door and a willingness to talk to anybody and to try and understand what they're dealing with and what an appropriate solution would be," Gloria says. "Some of the folks supporting my mayoral campaign have opposed me in the past, recognizing that I don't always vote with them, and we're not always in agreement. From where I sit, that's not a bad thing."The campaign committee supporting Bry got the largest donation from the Infrastructure PAC of the Associates General Contractors. They gave ,000. ACE Parking and its owner, Scott Jones, gave ,000. The rest comes primarily from individual donors.Goggin says looking at lists of donors can help voters decide who to support. By law, every donation is public record and available online. But it takes work to sift through the information."In local races, people have to figure out who these people are on their own," he says.However, because the campaign committees have to remain independent from the candidates, the people they support have no influence on what kind of messages they put out in ads. That can lead to controversy if a campaign committee runs negative ads or misconstrues the truth."Many candidates have lost the ability to control the message of their campaigns," Goggin says.
