BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official has called for more efforts to promote increased awareness about energy-savings among the public and increase investments into research for energy-saving technologies.Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remark in his letter to sponsors of China's 20th national energy-saving publicity week (June 12 to June 18) that ended on Friday.Various campaigns and promotional activities were held during the week to increase awareness about conserving energy among all communities and also promote energy-saving practices, Li said in the letter.Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said government should put more investment into research for energy-saving technologies.Additionally, long-term mechanisms for energy-savings should be established so that the 11th Five-Year Plan energy-saving goals could be realized, Li said.China seeks to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent in 2010 compared to 2005 levels, according to the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).The 20th national energy-saving publicity week was sponsored by the National Development and Reform Commission and 13 other government agencies.

In Chengxiang village, people were forced to row make-shift boats -- made of plastic bottles and planks -- to commute through the flooded streets.Chen Jian, the region's chief weather forecaster, said heavy rains are expected to fall on six Guangxi cities from June 7 to 10.Local disaster relief officials were ordered to evacuate residents in low-lying areas in advance. Safety measures at reservoirs shall also be reviewed, officials said.In Jiangxi Province, where mudslides recently derailed a train and flooding forced the evacuation of 90,000 residents, government departments and agencies were ordered to ramp up flood prevention measures.Schools, coal mines, markets and other populated areas will be carefully monitored to prevent accidents that could lead to massive casualties, according to officials.The alert noted that water levels in Jiangxi's reservoirs and waterways remain high, posing serious threats to the government's flood prevention work.Alarms also rang in central Hubei Province. The provincial meteorological bureau forecast heavy storms to hit Hubei from June 7 to 8 and might trigger flooding in its southern mountainous areas.By June 3, floods have killed 125 people and left 34 people missing all over China, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said.More than 23.09 million people and 1.55 million hectares of crops were affected. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Economic data for May released Friday showed that China was eyeing rising inflation and slowing economic growth, indicative of what the "the most complicated year" meant for the country's economy.Experts said the mixed bag of economic data would make it difficult for China's policymakers in the coming months.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose in May to 3.1 percent, the highest since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Friday.The NBS also reported that growth of industrial value-added output slowed to 16.5 percent in May from 17.8 percent in April.Urban fixed assets investment for the first five months rose 25.9 percent year on year, 0.2 percentage points down from the first four months.INFLATION QUICKENSThe 3.1 percent CPI growth was up 0.3 percentage points from April's rise of 2.8 percent. In the first five months, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.The May figure exceeded the government's year-average target of 3 percent set in March.The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year in May, up 0.3 percentage points from April's 6.8 percent.In May, the CPI in China's urban areas increased 2.9 percent and in rural regions by 3.3 percent. Food prices, which accounted for about a third of the weighting in calculating the CPI, rose 6.1 percent.
