BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Emissions of sulfur dioxide, a major pollutant, in China dropped 10.4 percent last year compared with that of 2008, Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian said here Monday.Zhou told a national conference that sulfur dioxide emissions were down 24.6 percent compared with that of 2005.The government set the target of cutting emissions of major pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, by 10 percent from 2006 to 2010, the 11th Five-Year Plan period.Zhou said the country's COD and emissions of sulfur dioxide fell for four consecutive years after the target was set at the beginning of 2006.He said the successful reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions could be attributed to the use of desulfurization. Statistics show China had built more than 411 million kilowatts of desulfurization units since 2006.However, he said it was still difficult to reduce the amount of COD and the reduction progress was far different among regions.He said this year was the last year in achieving the 11th Five-Year Plan and the government appraisal showed that the environmental protection goal set in the plan could be achieved in time.Zhou said more than 400,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide would be reduced this year and another 200,000 tonnes of COD would be cut down after the 11th Five-Year Plan was met.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's operational high-speed railways have exceeded 3,300 kilometers, leading the world in both length and technologies, the Ministry of Railways said on its official website Thursday.Last year China finished two high-speed railways between Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi'an, with an operating speed of 350 km/h. Before that, China had built high-speed railways between some of its major cities, including Beijing-Tianjin, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan, Qingdao-Jinan, Hefei-Wuhan and Hefei-Nanjing.A number of new high-speed railways are being built and will be finished in the coming few years, of which the Beijing-Shanghai line has a length of 1,318 km and a designed travel speed of 350 km/h. Construction of the line started in April 2008 and would finish in around five years. TAIPEI, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with the mainland is aimed to help Taiwanese people to do business and boost the island's competitiveness.Ma made the remarks in Taoyuan, a northwestern county of the island, at a gathering to mark the Chinese Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year.The ECFA is a wide-ranging economic pact for further normalizing trade and investment ties across the Taiwan Strait, which Ma hopes to sign with the mainland this year to help fuel Taiwan's economic revival.Tariff reduction would promote the sales of goods from Taiwan to the mainland, which will benefit both the Taiwanese businesses and the foreign-funded businesses in Taiwan, Ma said.This will help Taiwan to introduce more foreign investment and grant the island an opportunity to become a hub of economy and trade in the Asia-Pacific region, he said.As the mainland is Taiwan's biggest trade partner, the pact will certainly do more good than harm, Ma said.Ma also attended an ancestor worship ceremony in Majiazhuang, Miaoli County on Monday and said that the ancestors of him and local residents moved from Fufengtang, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, to the island some 2,000 years ago.He also spoke optimistically of the economy situation and expected an economic growth of 4 percent in Taiwan this year.
